If our keys have a chip in them, I'm not quite sure how mine isn't fried. It's been in the ocean quite a few times.

It isn't an active chip with electricity. It is an RFID Chip similar to a credit card a passive chip.

What I meant was that I'd buy the keys elsewhere and bring them to a dealer to cut and program. Some dealers might only do the work on keys that they sold.......

Walmart has the device to register the key in the ecu? When i had one programmed back in 06 the locksmith i went to had a unit he plugged into the obd port to get the truck to recognize the key.
My key also has a dot near the fob; this was particular and needed a blank with that dot

I paid $80 at the local ace hardware store.
What pisses me off is that the damn thing has a battery in it. I did not notice till I got home.
The truck will not start without this battery so obviously it's not reliable.
I use this key as the main key so when the battery does go dead, I will know, and then I can use the original key for a backup.

Uh, The key does not have a battery. It is a passive chip like in a credit card RFID.

That is not the key battery. That is the automatic door lock FOB.

The key has no power source. It is a passive ID Chip.

Are you trolling me or do you just have no knowledge about this subject?

Ok little jimmy, I will dumb it down for you....
    This is a key....
    3-10-18 008.jpg

Inside this key is a battery, without this battery the truck will not start.

Read this post as slowly as you need to so that you can understand.

OK, I didn't realize that you bought a cheap aftermarket knockoff.

The OEM Transponder System does not use or need any batteries. It uses a passive RFID chip in the key that gets power from the inductive coil in the steering column.

Sorry you were not able to read the information about the cheap knock-off key you bought. Enjoy your batteries.

As I'm understanding it, both of you are right. Correct me if I'm wrong, but non-Toyota keys have a battery and genuine Toyota keys don't. Do I have this right?

As far a s programming the keys, it sounds like the late second generation Tacos are more problematic for the DIY'er.....

The question that just popped into my head, how long is the service life of the non Toyota keys? It wouldn't be of much help when you needed the spare key and it was "dead".....
