Fuck I remember last year when the Sens went deep in the playoffs they were still talking about the leafs 50% of the time and they were eliminated.

Can you imagine if the leafs had made it far? I bet you not a single Canadian team would be mentioned

Ah. Point taken lol. Still, lots of Leaf fans out there and the way the media in Canada is tuned towards them definitely puts a lot of people’s panties in a bunch. ”They hate us because they ain’t us,” definitely applies. The nice thing is that local radio is usually not that way. At least it’s not that way where I live.

I'm summoning the ghost of Harold Ballard to curse the Leafs. If they meet the Bruins in the 1st round at least we won't have to hear about them long :) .

I was pretty vocal about the offsides, in the past. I just wanted to say that I am 100% ok with Dallas challenging that goal and it being called CORRECTLY with Geno offsides. I know it is petty but it was the right call. With so many rules with gray area (like goaltender interference), I like that offsides is clear cut. Leave it that way. You are either onsides or you aren't. Whether it's 2ft, 1in or whatever. Sorry, rant over. But people argue that it has no effect on the play. Well that is a judgement call. They more clear-cut the rules are, the better. Geno was off and I think it was ruled correctly.

Just had to throw that out there, because I didn't want it to seem like I am only ok with it when it favors my team.

Lol...I thought it was a horrible call, correct or not. He was skating across the blue line intentionally to stay on side and yet got called off side. That is the perfect example of why the rule needs to be amended

Offside is offside. Just like tripping is tripping, even if you weren't trying to get your stick tangled up in someone else skates. I'd rather have a rule that's 100% objective even if it means some goals get called back. Do you really want offsides going the way of goalie interference where nobody knows how a call will go because the linesman decided that the guy coming into the zone was *trying* to stay onside?

I don’t pass time thinking about it, but something that is less anally retentive and promotes the flow of the game.

I can appreciate that some people are more comfortable with tightly delineated rules. In some cases I can even get behind the need for it. The offside rule in my opinion as a player, is for preventing good old fashioned ‘Cherry Picking’ and to give defenders a fair position. A player moving laterally across the blue line to stay onside is in my opinion, on side. That is simply how I see it.

I agree with you, in theory. But you need to define it at some point or another. Like it or not, as it is right now there is a very clear on/off definition. If we start putting other factors into it, like intention to stay onsides, how much it effects the play etc, then you are opening up a huge can of worms. Then it becomes situational and a judgement call. So somewhere down the line someone will be offsides, the refs won't call it because of 'intent' or whatever the reasoning and the result is no better than what we have now. in fact it will be worse because as it is now, at least the call is almost always correct.

Correct is not always correct and sometimes rules are for fools. I am not too caught up in it either way. I just call it as I see it.

Hockey was a great game before you and I were here with our HD instant replay and high blood pressure

I dunno, man. I think they did good with the rule change this year. I wasn't sure at first but as the year went on, I like that you get a penalty for challenging and getting it wrong. A few teams have been burned by it. So you better make sure before you challenge. That seemed to take away a lot of the nonsense challenges, like before. I mean, that was a pretty ballsy challenge by Dallas. They lose that, the goal goes on the board, plus they put the Pens Powerplay back out there. But it was clearly offsides. I am not sure if you guys saw earlier in that game (2nd period / long change) but Pens had 1, maybe 2 offsides calls when guys were getting onto the bench as we brought it in the zone. Guys didn't get off quick enough and the play was blown dead. That was during the 'flow of the game'. The ref found it necessary to blow that play dead, even though the Penguin player was going onto the bench. So if you call that play dead in live action, you need to call a player offsides when he is part of the rush, in my opinion.

or change the offside rule so breaking the plane of the blueline is all that matters and not if the skate is in the air or not , thats stupid and basically has no effect on play

No, don’t do this. Not unless a computer will make the call every time. As a linesman who has done fairly fast hockey this would not work.

I should think the sensor puck will help all this. Apparently it’s ready for next year. Have the puck linked to a high speed camera, make every offside call reviewed quickly in Toronto. If it’s offside have a green light come on behind the net signalling the ref to blow it down offside. End of story.
