I have tendonitis in my achilles and when it flares i will use my right foot on the clutch to shift gears.

 

I did that also in my mustang...after I broke my left ankle

Got my speeddawg.com shift knob last night. Used the grommet trick to handle the boot, which works great after a bit of trimming. The "blue pearl" color really goes well with my BBP truck.

 

I'm looking to get my first Tacoma. My two biggest requirements are manual transmission and a long bed. I understand in previous years, this combo was generally only available on specific trims. Can someone elucidate me on the 2017/2018 options?

Toyota's site doesn't allow selection of manual trans and the rep at the local dealership doesn't know enough - waiting till next week to ask his boss. The sales rep says this will probably need to be a custom build, because he doesn't see anything in this region (Austin/Central Texas) that they can order in.

Any tips on finding some in another region? Almost all the car sites are terrible about filtering or properly listing the transmission on their trucks! Let alone whether they're long bed or short.

 

Its actually the other way around, previous Gen Tacoma's were more widely available in Manuals. If you want a 2018 Manual Long Bed then you are stuck with a TRD Sport Access Cab. You can go on Cars.com and pick manual Tacoma's to see what is available currently.

 

Manual is unfortunately not available in the long bed with double cab. Although, now you can get the off-road package in the long bed which you couldn't in previous years.

I was previously looking at used Tacomas, but they're still hard to come by around here and have always sold before I have a chance to get to it. I only started looking at the newer models for the possibility of leasing, which can be easier on the budget for the next couple years.

I don't need too many bells and whistles; just a nice Tacoma that can haul my bike around comfortably.

 

In all honesty, it is generally not worth it to buy a used Tacoma, too close to the price of a new one.

 

That's pretty much the conclusion I've come to for Tacomas made in the last few years. Heck, even older if they're low enough mileage and in good condition, the resale value is incredible.

I miss the smaller frames of the 1st and 2nd gen, but appreciate the safety improvements of the 3rd gen. Plus, financing is potentially far better on new.

The sales rep at the dealership wasn't sure if they'll be able to lease a custom build, but I figure this combo is uncommon enough that it would sell quickly (if for some reason I didn't decide to buy it out after).

 

The ONLY package that is available with the manual transmission and the 6' bed is the TRD Sport Access Cab. Any dealer should be able to allocate one for you. Any other trim with a 6' bed is only available with the automatic

 

Almost caused some major Fender damage to my truck at work this morning.

Pulled into a parking space right next to a large waste container at 2am. I Parked but felt like I needed to pull forward some more so I rolled a bit and then heard a very subtle thud that most people probably would not have heard. I thank God that checked I my passenger mirror and saw a long metal pipe touching the bottom of my fender flare. I had not seen it in the darkness but it was the long door handle to the large roll-off container next to me. The pipe had made contact at the bottom of the fender flare covered by transparent plastic and was pushing the whole flare into the body panel. I moved back and there were no scratches, no warped body panel, except now there is a very hard to see shallow dent in the plastic of the fender flare.

 

Regarding the accumulator removal, I was at the autoparts store and looked at all the couplers that they had. Their only metric one was an M10x1.0 thread with a 3/16in hex. I grabbed it just in case it might work. No go though.

The weather was nice today, so I rode. With the truck cold, I pulled the heat shield. I don't know how folks bent the stock lines to work. There doesn't seem to be enough there to couple up.

I did get dimensions though. The flare nuts are 10mm hex. The line is 5mm (?). I need to confirm if this is an actual size. It is something close to that and was hard to get my calipers in there. The flare thread appears to be 10mm (measured 9.6mm between the end of the threads and the hex). I would assume 1.0mm pitch. The accumulator height is 30mm and length is 40mm. It's a straight up right angle.

The only thing that I don't know is what the flare type is. Looking around, there seems to be three different types.

I'm going to ping my friend to see if he got his flaring tool back. If he can't do metric and I can find out which flare it is, I will try to see if I can get one fabbed.

 

I haven't tried using my right foot for the clutch, but often use my left hand to shift.

 

I think the hard line might be 3/16in tube, which is close to my 5mm measurement. Searching around, it looks like it is a double flare. So, my friend's SAE double flaring tool might work?

Today or tomorrow, I will drop back by the autoparts store and grab some 3/16in nicopp tube and a couple female M10x1.0 fittings and test it out as soon as I can.

 

I've always bought manual trucks since they're 2nd vehicles and I don't use them for commuting, so no heavy traffic.

It took me awhile to find a Silver 2017 MT Access Cab, really like the suicide opening doors, not really a fan of the four door Tacoma, especially since most have 5ft beds. This might be the last generation of the Tacoma manual transmission.

The only thing I wish my truck had was the electronic rear locker, only for the once or twice I would use it! My 1st gen Tacoma I only used it once in 12 years.

 

I wanted a locker myself, but the ACLB MT was much more important to me. That said, check out the Traction Control sticky. The system seems to work great in everything that I have seen and there are videos of folks doing much more just letting TRAC do its thing. On the 3rd Gen SR / SR5 / Sport / Limited, it defaults to on in both 4Hi and 4Lo.
