Any woodworkers?

the big one has some severe rust pitting on the bottom of it. What do you think they are worth?

I have the large front vise from woodcraft (https://www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-large-front-vise).

Its ok. The roll pin that holds the front handle connection to the screw rod sheared off after about a year. I ended up finding a screwdriver that I could force through the holes to fix it (stuck it through then bent both ends to lock it on). The jaws tend to rack quite a bit (top to bottom and side to side). I've been thinking about replacing it with a benchcrafted with the criss cross.

 

I have the woodcraft, and I agree that it racks overmuch. The bench crafted is oh-so-sweet...
I have the Benchcrafted moxon vise, and it's an awesome tool.

 

Lowe’s by me carries some decent finished hardwood.

 

Speaking of benches, what are your guys thoughts about workbench top wood quality? My bench is made from laminated home depot 2x6s. Usually about once a year, a plane the top smooth and flat again. I'm of the mindset that my bench is a tool that is meant to get used and abused.

I look at some workbenches made from thick hard maple or the like, and the whole bench is a work of art (like Samurai Carpenter's Bench - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCuvdv8FO54) .

If i had a bench like that, i would be afraid to use it like a bench. I would cringe the first time I slip with a chisel or cut through a work piece held in the vice and run the saw into the edge of the bench.

Do you guys have super nice benches or are they more along the function over form style?

 

My bench is like yours, and looks like ass. But it works. I built the moxon from maple, and that first chisel ding hurt, but I'm over it.

 

My work bench is 3 layers of mdf with an 1/8" layer of replaceable hardboard on top. Don't care if I ding it up.

 

Built the mandatory split top Roubo out of Maple. Benchcrafted hardware. Love that stuff. Expensive, but very smooth.

 

Thats a beautiful bench! Thats the type of bench i'd be afraid to use. I would cry the first time the chisel breaks through and digs into the surface.

 

Thank you @chertzog. About a week after putting the finishing touches on it I was cutting a small trim piece by hand in the front vice with the saw tilted up at an angle. Wasn't paying attention and before I knew it had started cutting into the chop. So it's kinda like getting that first ding in your new truck. You dread it happening. You're pissed off when it does happen. But after that, it's no big deal.

 

Personally I like having the mass of a full size bench when planing and sawing. As best I can estimate, mine ended up around 380-400 lbs. Solid as a rock. No flex in the top when chopping either.

 

I agree. I use a Moxon vise for cutting dovetails to raise the workpiece up another 10-12".

 

Been working on a jewelry armoire for my wife. The shallow vessel on top is from spalted Western Sycamore, as will be the drawer and wing fronts. The main structural components are mahogany, and the drawer sides and backs are poplar.

I have enjoyed the challenge of half-blind dovetails, and the Veritas Plow Plane makes cutting grooves for the drawer bottoms downright easy.

I'll post up when it's finished. I used a friend's table saw to rip the poplar, but everything else is done by hand.
