How will you verify where the skaters are in relation to the puck? Even with more cameras I don't think it's possible to make that kind of call in real time which I think is what you're getting at?

That’s what the camera is for. It should be a high speed camera that takes a picture the moment the puck crosses the blue line. Then in Toronto within 30 seconds someone can have a look at it and if it’s offside and the play is still in the zone turn on the green light. If a goal has been scored it can be called back right away instead of waiting five minutes. It’s really pretty simple, use the sensor that will be there to take a perfect picture at the perfect time than call back the goal without the 5 minutes of a ref staring at a 9” iPad.

I guess that just really doesn't seem a whole lot different than what we have now, and still leaves the issue of being able to actually see whether a skate is on or off the ice by a fraction of an inch from a single camera view. I mean I don't really think the issue is trying to get an accurate idea of when the puck crosses the blue line, but more the issue of being able to actually see the skater in question. So I think that would still leave the issue of trying to pan through multiple shots of the same play trying to find the "perfect picture" where you can actually make a determination.

Right now it's a video camera that's used to capture the images because there is no automatic trigger available to only operate a still frame camera exactly when the puck crosses the line. Also, the ref on the ice makes the call right now. Toronto has nothing to do with it. So you have an official staring at a tiny little iPad looking at shitty still frame video trying to make the call. My suggestion is to go to high end camera equipment that fires at the moment the puck enters and have Toronto review the play on their significantly better displays with an official who is outside of the play.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but I'd suggest it's a lot better than what we deal with now. Actually, just moving the decision to Toronto would make the situation a whole lot better, never mind the fancy camera idea.

The new goal cameras are supposed to operate on the same principle. High speed cameras that fire when the puck crosses the line. If the puck isn't visible but was on it's way into the net it's assumed to be a goal. At least that's the last revision of the technology the NHL talked about. The pucks each cost something like $70, so those in the stands will be a bit funny.

Lets put GPS trackers in each skate.

Wait, better idea. How about they put a magnetic strip along the blue line and if a skate crosses the line before the puck, it activites a magnet so powerful it can stop a freight train in its tracks.

Lets just agree its a fast paced sport and the refs and cameras catch what they can.

I'm more interested on if they can put cameras at the goal line so we can see a puck cross even if someone is on top of it.

Sure, why not. Actually, why not just have the league invest all the player salaries into a 4K VR simulation of NHL 18 that we can all watch through Vive headsets in our seats? Then the computer can tell us when it's offside and we don't have to worry about Crosby taking another blow to the head.

Only thing reviewable should be goals. Refs catch 99% of all close off sides. I can live with a mistake here or there. Just my .02 . All the years I played I don't remember anything that really mattered but then I did have my bell rung fairly consistently and don't remember everything clearly.

Ovie is going to rank up there with one of the best to never win. Can you imagine how many he'd have scored in the 80's/ early 90's?
