I Bailed on Facebook, and It Feels Wonderful

Hey webdr THANK YOU for this thread. You know that old mantra "if I could just help one person blahblah..." well you did. I Mulled it over for about half a minute and went in there and deleted my account too. Like another guy said in here I honestly don't know why I even had an account there. I got one just to look up old haunts and past friends stuff like that and wound up with all that "memories" crap and some radio stuff-it's all vapid bullshit. Cheers

 

Whats up Oz! Who needs it. Hell youtube has a better collection of all that nostalgic stuff anyway. Just about anything you could muster up from your past it's in there.

 

Deactivated on New Year’s Day. Been great. You realize how quick you just don’t care about other people’s lifes anymore. Really just miss the marketplace for truck parts and selling old stuff.

 

But wouldn't craigslist local be as effective? Probably FB covered more people.

I don't have any of that social media bullshit either, the exception being part of a few forums like TW too. Be glad you moved on from it and don't look back, you'll probably be happier (less aggravated) for it.

Facebook deleter pro tip:

Like many of you, I deleted Facebook just about two years back, and was so much happier for it. I was just fine without it, but found I had to rejoin to participate in some organized local 4WD events that were FB-based (ughhh).

Here is what you need to do if you find yourself in my shoes:

1 - log back on to “reactivite” your FB account. (Yes all of your crap will still be there)

2 - immediately “unfriend” all of your contacts, including family. Do not hesitate at this stage! You must delete all “friends” immediately! (Once they are gone you will not miss them, or their “humble brag” vacay selfies, or their “can I get some likes cause my grandma just died” posts, etc, etc, etc......fuck all that shit.)

3 - IMPORTANT: toggle the “who can send me a friend request” to “friends of friends only”, and then set the “make my profile searchable” to NO.

4 - THE HACK: since you now have no ‘friends’, no one can friend request you (you have no ‘friends of friends’, because you have no ‘friends’). Boom....you are officially removed from the social media aspect of FB, but can still participate in forums, join private chats to organize events, join 4WD clubs , follow businesses or entertainers.....etc. Furthermore, since your profile is not searchable , the only people who can find you, or contact you, are people within the clubs you have chosen to join.

5 - clean up your page: It took a few hours, but under “activity log”, I deleted every ‘like’, comment, or post I had ever made, and deleted all photos from my page, other than a picture of my taco as a profile pic. Done.

From this point forward you can use FB as a tool for things that require it, but will rarely catch yourself browsing it. Your social network will not rebuild itself because none of the new people you meet can ‘friend request’ you, they can only message you, or interact with you on forums, which is pretty much what we can do here on TW. I check FB maybe once every couple weeks for the couple 4WD clubs I am part of.

 

I only got facebook for the 4wheel clubs. Basically never added anyone and never used my real name lol

Had fb when I was deployed in 09 easier to stay in touch with family. Got back deactivated it never had the urge to go back. TW is all the “social media” an has cost me a small fortune..An I’d do it again. Props to OP for finding more meaningful things with your time, now to try an delete Clash of clans an Hill Climb 2 for myself impossible.

 

I spend more time on TW than Facebook...

The biggest reason I don't delete my account is because I have so many irreplaceable family photos on it!

 

One of my friends is still into those stupid Facebook apps...
