Hey folks! Basically a brand new winch, smittybilt 9.5k. I have 2 pulls on it. With the clutch disengaged (free spool mode) it's very tough to pull the line out. Is this because it's so new? It was easier to spool out using the motor than it was to pull by hand.

I haven't tried free spool after the two pulls. Maybe it's changed.

I have no experience with larger winches, but when I had my 4x4 atvs, the winches in free spool unwound very easily. Maybe you need to pull it apart and grease something? Just brainstorming out loud, like I said I have no experience with larger winches.

Work the lever some. I have the smitty 10k and it was easy to freespool. You have synthetic rope? Is it bound up on itself?

Not bound on itself. I am able to pull it out, it just takes me throwing my weight into it. The lever to select free spool and clutch engaged throws fine, it just feels like the damn drum doesn't want to turn as easy as it should.

Finally got a chance to use these traction boards last night in the snow. One of my employees ran off the road over a ditch in a 2000 Monte Carlo. Used the mats to get him back to the ditch and made a bridge across the ditch. Worked great. I only paid 83$ for them. I haven't seen them below 100$ lately.

Yeah I remember that project you did. I was hoping this wasn't the fix, not that something needs to be fixed... I don't have any kind of workbench set up yet.

Moly fortified GM grease. It free spoils decently well. If I were to redo it I’d use synthetic marine grease
