Truck gets “stuck” in gear

hey guys. This happened to me 2-3 times iver the past 2-3 months. Happens randomly and have no idea what it is. Usually it happens when the truck is parked.

Ill have the truck (manual 2007 4x4 regular cab) in gear, and go to drive and it starts to rev, but seems like the wheels are locked up and doesnt move. 2 of the 3 times i just revved it and it eventually started moving but just seemed like somebody was holding the ebrake and then just let it go. The 1 time I literally had to turn the engine off and turn it back on and it drove away fine. Any ideas?

 

Are you using your E brake or keeping it off when parked?

 

yes i use the ebrake when parked.

 

Any chance there is water in the Ebrake cable and it's freezing/seizing? How many miles on the clutch/pressureplate?

 

Next time your out driving it, stick it in 5th gear whenever youre driving pretty slow 35-45 mph and floor it. See if it lugs down or if the revs jump up. If the revs jump up, then its your clutch starting to slip. If it lugs down, then id guess the problem isnt your clutch, but something to do with the brakes

 

not sure about the ebrake. 40k on the clutch

 

ok thanks I can try this. I have a silly suspicious that it is the brakes also.. just not sure how I can find out for sure

 

No problem, with 40k on the clutch, im almost 100% sure its not that, unless you are verrrry hard on it, or you got a defective luk unit. Ive read a few things about the luk clutches failing prematurely, so that could also be it..

 

If it was me, I would stop using the ebrake for a while and see what happens.

 

The one thing that makes me skeptical of the ebrake is the first time it did it, the ebrake wasnt used that day

 

At 40mph , after going from 2nd to 5th, held solid at 1500rpms. Clutch feels fine

 

Wasn't used at all? or only used once?

What have been the temps when this happens?

I'm guessing it's freezing/sticking brakes.

As in i was driving out of a parkinglot, and stopped at a stop sign, and all of the sudden, i thought the tranny locked up. Wouldnt move. But went in gear and freereved.

 

I have had in the past a drum brake bonded (adhesive) lining separate from its shoe. It floated in place next to the shoe, but every once in a while the lining would get moved and pinched/wedged between the the other shoe's lining and the drum - causing the wheel to lock up. I had to pull the drum to find the problem. I just replaced the shoes and all was well ...

 

Intereting, it sounds like you have either a spring return issue or another cause of binding.

 

Remove drums, clean/inspect/adjust shoes as needed. You can dab a little grease on the shoe/backing plate contact points by gently prying the shoes away from the backing plate with a small pry-bar

 

If the the ebrake is stuck it would stall and not rev up. If it is revving up but not moving it is the clutch. If the clutch is not installed right or you don’t know how to drive it properly it can go bad quickly

 

I am quite well versed in driving manual for over 30 years. Never blown a clutch in over 25 road sorthy vehicles. im 99.9% sure its not a transmission issue

Btw why would the ebrake being stuck on a manual vehicle not allow a vehicle to free-rev? Lol

 

Yeah it seems very odd to me as well
