Question on taking off badges

Ok, so I want to debadged my tailgate, but I just realized I had toyota put on the protective paint coating when I bought my car. If i take off all the badges, will the paint where they used to be start to fade faster?

What should I do?

 

more than likely but the best way to take them off without bending them or messing up the paint is get a piece of fishing line started on a corner and pull it to the other side. works great! especially if you let the truck sit in the sun for a few hours

 

Once you get the badges off just put some good wax on that area. It shouldn't fade any faster than the rest of the truck.

 

I used a blow dryer to heat up the badges and it made it a lot easier.
afterwards I hit it with some bug and tar remover then wash and waxed.
I highly doubt it'll fade any faster, and it looks way cleaner!

 

I used some fishing line with a hair dryer and it worked great. Love the look of it now!

i used power pro fishing line(braided synthetic) it worked great!
that protective coating( they charged you idk how much for ) can be bought from the dealer for like $20 it goes on just like wax (strangely enough).

 

My kid discovered this accidentally (posted on the forums but that was a long time ago) - if you have the stick stuff left on the truck after the badges come off, Icy Hot takes it right off.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I do have a tangential question here.

So I have a '98 Tacoma and wish to debadge the tailgate as well. A local body shop told me if I do, being 12 years later, the paint color under the badges won't match the rest of the body due to the latter fading.

The color of my truck is that dark red (maroon? sorry I don't know the official color name) so the chances of variation is probably greater than that of say white for example.

Does anyone have any suggestions/opinions? I'd love to hear them.

yea, just be careful with that heat gun...you don't wanna bubble your paint

I just used fishing line and goo gone...then waxed the hell outta it and it came out perfect

 

Also, on the subaru forum I belong to, many there suggest using Goo Gone for removing the sticky reside after debadging. Easily removes the glue without affecting your paint or finish.

 

I used fishing line and a hairdryer. It came off really good. I used Goo gone to take off the sticky residue it left on too. Thanks for the help. It looks realy clean

 

I went in this order:

Hair dryer - Fishing Line - Goo Gone

Worked perfectly!

 

I have also used fishing line, heat gun and goo gone. Works great. Goo gone takes off all the sticky and cleans it pretty well.

 

hate to say it but he is probably right. but the extent of fading really depends on alot of things like was the truck parked in direct sunlight, was it waxed regularly.......
i say take them off and if the fading is that bad just put them back on(you will have a perfect template for re-alignment) with some good molding adhesive.

Not waxed regularly, at all. (Puts shield up for ensuing shit storm )

And I like your style... I think I'll give it a shot once said sun comes out and warms the truck up to the point of melting.

I waited for it to be 105 outside for a week and it peeled right off. No need to use a heat gun or fishing line.

 

I just debadged my black 05' and was a little worried that the paint would be different. Well all went well and the paint under the badges looks the same as the rest of the truck. I did use a heat gun and a little screw driver to pry the badges off. I did not care if they broke because I am not going to use them again.

 

Being you have a new truck, you should be fine after you remove those letters. Just give it lots of wax & it should be fine. My truck was 2 years old & when I removed them & I had no marks at all. Just make sure you remove all the sticky stuff with rubbing alcohol.

 

I parked my Taco in the direct sun and used 12 pound nylon fishing line. Wear gloves so you don't cut your fingers on the line. Use a back and forth sawing motion. After removal I used Goo-Gone to removed any residual adhesive. Then I washed and waxed. Debadging is the way to go. Very clean look.
