It looks like thermal shock breakage due to improper annealing at the glass plant.

These stories are more and more common. S/R and sometimes rear windows breaking for apparently no reason. People have all sorts of trouble getting dealers to fix it under warranty too.

Why am I not shocked this happened to you on Deerfoot. :frusty:

Dealers tend to lie about options available to sell current stock. Not saying that is the case here, but it maybe. I was told a lot of options were not available, that were when I bought in 2016, because they wanted to off load a truck on the lot for me.

This is a us truck. I was told candana couldn't get me this truck so I bought it the states. Long bed trd off road double cab and it has crawl control. And now a broke. Sun roof...

I'm dropping the truck off toorrow morning. I was happy with their response. We will see what they do for me.

Seeing this on Mercedes here & there now. Believe BMW is also having this issue. Had a few were just all of a sudden the sunroof glass breaks. Usually happens when the shade is closed though. To much cabin pressure is believed to be the issue.

Can cabin pressure really get that high? I’m pretty sure that the cabin isn’t sealed.

No way. Truck has vents in the cab. Even if you sealed them off (mine are but I have no sun roof) it's not enough pressure to break the glass.

The issue we have been told is when the sunshade is closed the pressure between the glass & shade can be to much over time. Its a known issue for most manufacturers.

Kind of seems with the gas breaking upwards and the what sounds like a motor kicking on just before it broke suggests that it spontaneously tried to close it more. Definitely give the dealer the video and watch it with them for the sound.

I’d bet you’d have bigger problems of the medical variety if it were otherwise. Imagine climbing a mountain with the windows closed then opening them at the summit.

Hmmm. I’m doubtful but hey...I’m no engineer.

But what about the rain tubes that drain water?

Neither am I lol. Just overheard our field rep one day when coming to look at a CLA that had the sunroof glass shatter when the customer closed the door.

Oh yeah. I hadn’t considered that. Surge of pressure in that situation. The vents may not always be adequate for that kind of volume.

Back to the tint subject, I was gonna have skylights tinted in sunroom. The guy said no way. He wouldn’t tint them. I called the manufacturer velux and they also said not to tint because it could crack the glass.....

I've had back windows pop out from techs slamming doors right after I've installed it before the urethane was set. so yeah there is quite a bit of pressure. not sure if it could shatter glass though.
