Hey, since I got your attention, what is the best way to recover everything off a hard drive from a PC I may no longer be able to boot? Don't judge.

Desk. At this point I can't even hit F1 or F2. So yeah, if I can find or acquire the damn recovery disk and get it booted, I want to copy everything (I mean just user files, photos, music, docs, etc.) over to a portable 2 TB SSD. while I figure out what to go buy next.

If only I had another computer lying around...

The irony is that this is the second HD in the machine. The first one was taking a shit, and I bought another HD, and a long-gone coworker in IT installed fresh Win 7 Pro on it. That became primary, and then I reformatted the old drive and just left in there. But I don't trust it.

Well like @Silver02Taco mentioned you'll want to pull the drive and copy the files over on another computer using one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MVRS38G

Or you can download a program on a USB drive and do a full clone of the current drive to a new drive.

    It’s fucken brutal bro!
Still trying to figure out how They justify calling it a “30hr” course. Sat through 3hrs of this shit this morning and it said I’m only 5% completed. Now I’m no fucken math wizard but I’m pretty sure 3 of 30 hrs doesn’t = 5%. :frusty:

Interdasting, This is what I am after, I think.

So boot a good PC or laptop, and using the SATA adapter, I can access the Troubled Drive in question (after removing it from the other PC chassis) and access it like any other external drive device? Then just copy files over the the boot PC/laptop? Any other software or utility needed?

Yes, it will mount just like a thumb drive with that SATA connector. Then you can recover files off it. Software, not so much as most software creates registry entries required to run.

Or you can clone the current drive to a new drive and throw it back into the chasis and it 'should' boot just like it used to. Hard to tell though without knowing what's going on with the drive.

"New" drive has everything on it, OS and other files. I can't even remember if I ended up saving anything on the other drive. New PC has been on my list for 2 years. Then The Great Stupiding happened and I come last all the time now.

Besides making too much noise for a couple years, the only recent clue to the drive's demise recently has been clock/battery errors that lead me to find the boot drive had been changed to floppy, and I changed that to "none" and that worked fine ever since. I can't remember the exact error message. I basically did this:

When you come to this screen, hit "f2" to go into the bios/cmos setup
    arrow over to "Advanced"
    then down to "Integrated peripherals"
go down to "Drive A" and switch it to "none"

But now I can't even do that, so I am wondering if it is just the CMOS battery I need to replace. Would/should it boot then? Thoughts?
