I just ordered an iMac, payed $1189 out the door on the military store online so I didn't have to pay tax, the only bad part is it says it can take 21 days for delivery:mad:. I hope I'm gonna love this thing, my dell crashed after only 3 years of use, which software should I get, I have a DSLR Canon xsi camera and I need the microsoft office for schoolwork, any other suggestions? Should I get the photoshop software, remote control, any other accessories? I'm new to this brand so any insight can be great.

Are you using a RAW workflow?

If so, I would consider downloading the Lightroom 3 Beta 2. It's free to use (until the production version is released). Then get the Apple Aperture 3 trial. If either one does what you need it to do for your photos, then save your money and get either one instead of Photoshop.

I dont even know what RAW workflow means? It sounds like for photos, I'll look into those once I get it sometime this year hopefully.

i use lightroom also...RAW just means completely uncompressed files straight from the camera..only some programs can open RAW files.

Well, you have an XSi, so I assumed you had some sort of workflow for your photo work, whether you're using RAW vs JPEG (or RAW+JPEG), and using referenced libraries or managed files.

I bit the Apple bullet about 2 weeks ago when I bought an iMac and won't ever turn back. It takes a little while to figure everything out but so far I love it. Good choice!

Yeah I can't even tell you half the stuff that you can do with the camera, I just zoom in and focus and snap the photo, I just haven't had time to learn everything on it, nor do any photoshopping on the pictures I do take. I'm a big amateur at it.

I agree with the others. I have to use a P.C. at school and the Mac, either an IMAC or G4 are so much better. Don't have to worry about viruses or spyware to the extent that P.C.s experience. Microsoft does make a version of Office for MACs, but you can also download a free version of Sun Microsystems Open Office. Not as powerful as M.S. Office, but works well. The computer comes with some pretty powerful software as is.

No need for virus protection. Just make sure you don't install any software from risky websites..

If you need Office .... Send me a PM and I can mail you a CD with the software,

    Cheers..

Get open office for your microsoft stuff. It's free and legal to download and works well.

Iphoto is a good program for managing and doing basic editing.

Gimp is a photoshop like program that is also available for free.

You will love the mac. I'm not some tree hugging, granola eating, hybrid driving mac lover, but I love the fact that the thing just works. It doesn't freeze, it doesn't lock up, its battery lasts a long time, and it can handle running multiple programs at once without problems.

Son of a b-otch...I just bought stupid office, I got it off ebay for 75, but it was only one code, its 150 regular, and that chick made out good using the other two codes. I hate Bill Gates...But thanks for the offer, just a little too late.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "the thing just works"

you have to put 8 or more gigs of ram in a pc to get it to run halfway decent, I also love that you can close the lid pop it open and it is just on, it is like working a big iPod!

I hope so, I was a dell guy but it didn't last long only about 2 1/2 years, I didn't want to throw another 900 out the door through them for an economy PC, so I just said hell with it and got the credit card for a mac, its the desktop though. It was funny today my wife didnt know how to turn it on or where to find the internet button but so far we love the look and the run of it
