The stripers at the mouth of the Roanoke is some of my favorite striper fishing. An old work pal took me one yr and since then I've been hooked compared to where I normally would fish for them.

Have folks been catching them at the mouth? I typically fish for them below the 258 bridge which is near Scotland Neck

Yeah we were there when they were starting to move up to go spawn. I haven't ever been that far up the river fishing for them. They said there is good fishing all throughout the sound down there for them.

It's crazy in Weldon when they get to the dam. Their are 1000's of fish everywhere. Of course, you have to be there at the right time.

I have one in the truck my friend gave me .He got a few on one of those "blowout sales" they always have. Cheap yes, but it was effective when I really needed it needed it one day. Definitely would have been wind burned bad without it.

If you plan on using a conventional set up and use braid, your thumb might not like you after your first outing. I’ve seen people burn their thumbs up and have a loop catch their thumb and dig down to the bone. I use 16lb pro spec chrome on my convential gear for drum from the pier/surf, I hold about 275-300yrds and have more than enough line to fight a drum and most sharks you’ll encounter at the point.

Penn reel came in the mail today!! Im crossing my finger that 12 foot rod doesn't get broken in shipment. I have bad luck with deliveries lately. 1000yards of KK braid 40 pound hiVis incoming as well. I'm going to use it on my spinning reels and see how I like it. I have a huge spool of suffix that's going on the Penn SQL15. I need to get my butt down to the river and warm up with those shad. They are always fun on ultralight gear.

See, that's also been a concern of mine. I peeled open my thumb pretty good last year when I went down to Florida because I wasn't paying attention and left my thumb resting on the spool instead of just hovering over it.

Also sliced it open on my shock leader knot pretty good on that trip too. We were catching speckled trout as fast as you could cast, so I got excited and wasn't paying attention where I was laying my leader knot.

Good point to think about. :fistbump:

Something is better than nothing.

Don't know if you saw it in another post, but like I said, I'm not too far away from you. I live in Caroline (about 10 minutes from Kings Dominion), and if you want to go find a field somewhere and practice casting that thing, I'd totally be down to join you. I definitely want/need to work on my casting before this fall.

My front yard is a 260 yard field. I gringe at the thought of getting on 95 and heading north. I'm gonna give it a whirl when I get the rod !! I have 20+ baitcasters so i think i can figure it out. I also have a huge spool of 15 pound suffix so a few big nasty birdnest are in order :DMaybe you could come down for some crappie fishing on the james. Should be getting good in a few weeks. I really need to get back into cat fishing. Havent boated a 70 pounder in several years. You close to lake Anna? That place always kicked my butt except for crappie.

Cant avoid a shock knot, it’ll come get ya from time to time. I have a scar on my thumb from a few years back where it sliced me really good. But in all honesty, I’d much rather deal with that than braid. Braid in my opinion excells when targeting smaller fish, casting lighter jigs and trying to get distance.

Yeah, 95 is definitely a mess more often than not. Used to live in Spotsylvania and work in Stafford and Fairfax. Now THAT wasn't fun. So I know what you mean. Now I live down here and work by Bass Pro, so my biggest traffic jam is usually if the train is running through Doswell or a combine is headed from field to field during harvest season.

And I've never fished the James, but I'd totally be down. I'm not too far from Lake Anna. I haven't pulled much out of there myself either. With so much traffic, it's definitely a hard lake to fish.

Well I can't argue with experience. Especially from a local from the place I can hopefully call home one day.

I'm thinking about coming down next weekend on a solo trip, then me and a friend are trying to get down on the 13th of April. Plus more random trips here and there I'm sure.

But I'll definitely be down for the Drum tournament in October. I've never done it, but I've been wanting to for a few years. This year is the year.

One of these times we're gonna have to get together and see what we can pull out of the water.

I bought 6 at a killer deal two years ago. I think I paid $2 a piece. Still have them and use them especially in the summer. The frost tech ones are much, much better made. I got 3 of those for $20 this past fall.

You get him into something he has to paddle while you’re fishing circles around him pedaling, he won’t be happy.

I want to check it out but that’s the weekend of AOP. :annoyed:
