King Coilover Mystery

I bought these CO's used on local CL months ago with the intention of rebuilding them. They were supposedly off of a 3rd gen 4Runner so figured they should fit a first gen Tacoma.

Today I decided to test fit them real quick on my 2000 Tacoma and the bottom bolt lines up, but the the 3 top plate bolts do not. The top plate bolt holes seem to have a slightly larger spacing pattern to them than my Icon's I just pulled off.

Now I'm wondering if the CO's are for the application that guy said they were. The overall length is the same as my Icon's, just the top plate seems slightly different. I'm attaching some pics of them along side an Icon that was just removed from the truck.

Anyone have any ideas??

I was thinking that as a possibility. I'm not sure how to confirm that. I can't seem to find any part numbers anywhere on them. If I can't use them, I'd like to be able to sell them to someone who can.

 

Call king's and get some 1st gen top hats.

 

IIRC, 3rd gen 4runners have the same top plate bolt pattern as 1st gen tacomas, but are rotated differently.

Should work, you'll just have to spin the lower rod end so it's oriented correctly in relation to the top hat.

 

those King’s look like they are about an inch less stroke which means you would lose travel

 

I tried rotating them all the way around and they wouldn’t line up. I put an OEM too plate against it to compare and I could see it was off slightly...1/4” on each hole maybe.

I hadn’t even noticed that until you pointed it out. Makes me think even more so that these are not 1st gen Tacoma/3rd gen 4runner shocks.

 

Yeah, hate to say it but they are not right and you shouldn't use them but if they were the correct stroke length all you would have to do is remove that giant top hat and just use an aftermarket top hat like these, this is what every aftermarket long travel kit uses :

 

Thanks for that link. That’s pretty helpful. I’m thinking I’m going to either figure out what they’re for and maybe rebuild them for someone who may want to use them, unless someone on here ends up wanting to buy them.

 

Looks like a few others have hit on it. You may have 00-06 Tundra Coilovers. Tacoma/4Runners have a 3.75" pattern from center and the Tundra is closer to 4".
I would recommend contacting the manufacture to verify that their only difference is the the upper mount, if it is, stick with the same manufacture. Crossing over to a different mount from a different manufacture can dramatically change the overall length of the unit.
In my experience the final fitment for coilover units on vehicles incorporate the upper mount. Changing the mount from one company to another is not as black and white as it may seem.

Changing the top hat on a King is black and white, it is just a normal CO top cap with that overly fancy billet coil bucket adapter. You pull that allen head out drop the top hat and your looking at a normal King CO.
