I figured out the whole ham/race radios thing. Bottom line is you need order the handheld radio! I'm also going to get a mic for mine, so I can use it like the CB from the truck, but then take it out to spot and talk with easily.

It's called rugged radios, and it's what race teams use out in the desert, or NASCAR for example. Supposed to be as good as HAM but operate outside the HAM frequencies, thus not requiring a license. Basically it's a pretty grey area legally speaking and still requires this OTHER license but no one ever gets it.

So since I hate CB and want John and David to get HAM but they won't get their license, I want to try MURS. It's type of radio that doesn't require licensing, but a HAM can be programmed to operate on the frequencies. While technically illegal per the FCC, it won't be negatively affecting anyone and will be a night and day difference compared to HAM.

Got ya yeah we used a brand called Racing Radios or something like that essentially they are like a high end 2 way radio or at least the ones we used circle track racing. IDK what the Baja guys are running since they have to talk from such distances.

I've been wanting others to get it ever since my CB has given me such issues. I fucking hate how temperamental it is, and the range blows. With a $30 handheld HAM, it's much clearer and larger range. I've had my license for about 6 months now, ever since the mobtown AOAA event.

Maybe get a different CB? Or troubleshoot the cause of the tempermentalness?

Is that why you hate CB? Because of your issues? Or is there a different reason? I was thinking about upgrading my CB setup, but I'm not sure after my last trip. Apparently I come across very clear and other come back to me clear too.

I could buy another CB, but I don't see the point. Even when they work well, they don't for the reasons listed above. Hard to understand people and the range is short as hell.

The CB in Stewie worked fine, but again the range was shit and that was with a 5' antenna off the back. For an example of why range is useful, last night while camping I drove out to the main road to get service so I could call my wife and let her know I made it to camp alive. Had I broken down or crashed on the way, I would be SOL as there was zero service. With HAM, John could be at camp with his radio handy and I could call out I needed help. Just an example of a useful situation, although unlikely.
