I owned a 2005 and currently own a 2012 TRD Offroad two wheel drive access cab Tacoma. They are both great trucks and they were like a dime a dozen on the road. Fast forward to 2018 and you don't see the 2018 in theses models on the road at all. TRD Offroad access cab is only offered in a 4x4 version and I was able to order a TRD Sport access cab two wheel drive which should arrive at my dealer in about 10 days. I really wanted the Offroad version but they don't offer it in two wheel drive any longer so I had to settle for the Sport. I don't get it! They were always so popular and Toyota decides to hardly make them anymore. Again, they have always been super popular. What gives?

    Welcome to the forum!

I didn't realize the Prerunner ORs were ever popular. A 3rd gen 4x2 OR makes no sense, really, given the features available in the OR package.

I can't imagine buying a truck for a locking rear diff and upgraded suspension and numerous other off road oriented features then not wanting 4X4. Too me thats like taking a WRX STI with all its upgrades then putting the stock impreza engine in it.

I see what you're saying, however like many on this forum I am going for the look. I would rather have the black fender wells and 16" wheels rather what the Sport offers. I really don't care for the hood scoop as well. Again, these were former options that Toyota no longer offers.

Nothing wrong with going for looks. But a second gen and third gen off road are two TOTALLY different animals. The 2nd gen OR was an SR5 with a stiffer suspension and different interior cloth. The 3rd gen off roads are heavily modified, heavy use off road vehicles. The new off roads are marketed almost souly on their off road capability and most guys buy them for crawl control and the locker. Toyota probably figured that nobody would ever want these trucks in a 2wd configuration.

Besides, they can charge more for a 4x4.

I've seen plenty of 2WD OR DCSBs 3rd gens. Are you sure they aren't available as access Cabs?
