First Oil Change

    My truck is coming up to 2500mi and is wondering if there is any advantage/disadvantage to getting the oil change now and again at 5000mi. I get free oil changes thru the dealer every 5000mi so this would only cost me 1X. I read all about break in oil from the factory to metal shavings in the first 1000mi etc.. Please chime in and give me your thoughts, I can't think of any reason not to unless in fact there is special oil from the factory that needs to be in there for 5000mi.

    On new vehicles, I do mine around 1500 miles and then at 5000 mile intervals thereafter. If there ever will be any metal shavings or other debris, it will most likely happen at the beginning of the engine's life so I change it early.

    I just did mine, for the first time on this truck The oil shoots out of there like a jet stream! Just FYI.

    God knows why they used such a small bolt to drain the oil.

    ^Remove the oil filler cap first and it shouldn't do that.

    I don't think the trucks come with "special break-in oil". I changed it early for the first few. If you want to make it really easy to do yourself, attach a hose with a clamp to the drain under the filter.

    x2. my first oil change rivaled the spill in the gulf. did my second oil change yesterday with the Fumoto valve, must cleaner. oil filter wasn't easy to remove on the first change either....

    Ditto on the Fumoto valve. That thing is great. Also, there is a drain hole under the oil filter mount. Before you remove the filter, slide the rubber cap off the hole and slide some 1/2" (if I remember right) tubing on. Put the other end in your oil catch pan and voila - mess free filter change too.

    I'd say go for it. Just keep your types of oil the same. You probably don't need an über expensive filter if you're oy going to use it for 2,500 mi (but check with your dealership and warranty about that)
    I shoulda checked out this thread before staining the driveway. First gen filter location sucks.

    If you dont want to get a hose, just get a pop bottle and put under there and when its done, just empty the pop bottle.

    Change it now and again at 5k...and yes keep the same viscosity.
    Bear in mind the oil filter was put on by a robotic process
    at the factory (or by a gorilla) as it is a complete beotch to remove the first time.

    I bought a filter wrench with a 3/8" socket drive and unfortunately that didn't quite fit on the stock filter
    without slipping so i finally had to put a couple metal screws into the wrench and into the filter to get enough
    bite on the filter and do it the messy way.
    I blew half the afternoon trying to get that damn filter off.

    never noticed the oil filter drain plug though...good tip with the hose
    attachment.

    oh, and dont use the wrench to put the new filter on...hand tight is good.

    I hit 1556 miles on my 2010 tacoma and just followed Chris 4x4 oil change procedure and its easy. The original filter is on tight. Get some Oil filter pliers and get a grip near the bottom of the filter. Lefty loosy, righty tighty. I gave it a firm grip and turn and i felt the thing just gave way. Use OEM filters, I got mine at $5 a piece with one of those gasket washers from the dealer. I was so proud of my work. Next change will be the 5K mark.

    ^That makes absolutely no difference, at least in my case. That filter was pretty tough to get off the first time.

    On my first oil change I broke one strap wrench and finally got the filter off with the second one... :eek: They must put it on with 30lbs of torque at the factory.

    I'll chime in on the Fumoto, too. I like mine although if you wheel often you may want to skip it as it would absolutely suck to have it snap off and watch all your oil drain away into the dirt. It does drain slower than the stock setup but that gives me a couple of minutes to check all my other fluids, brakes, hoses and tires. I setup the drain pan, pop open the Fumoto, pop off the filler cap, hook up my drain hose to the plug under the filter and run it to my pan then swap out the filter. By the time I do that then check the other stuff it's ready to fill again... my last oil change took less than 20 minutes from opening the garage door to washing my hands and required no tools.

    I've wondered about this lately. not that i do much wheeling, but a well placed rock could probably do some damage.
