I've been thinking about replacing the stock fog bulbs in my '17 SR5 with some amber colored ones, but I have a few questions:
    1. Should I upgrade to LEDs at the same time?
      1. What size/model should I look for?
    2. What size will I need?
      1. I know the standard is H11, but if I go LED, what will change?
    3. Can I just plug and play with LEDs or is there more config necessary?
    4. I've seen the CaliRaised and other dealers who make pod replacements but I want something I can actually use on normal roads (I have a light bar and ditch lights I can use off-road)
Sorry if there is already a similar thread, but search skillz aren't great.

The guy who wrote that thread has forgotten more than most of us know (or think we know) about lighting.

I was reading that thread posted above. That is fine and dandy but most people like the idea of plug and play. Obviously you are gonna get some good light from a 95W bulb but it will melt your harness without thicker wires. Personally I am going to get some Baja Designs Squadron fogs but after looking at the youtube videos it looks like the wide angle lights are not well suited for fog lights on public roads so Im gonna look into the other lenses they offer. But if you are looking for just amber replacement halogen bulbs I have always been a fan of IPF bulbs. They don't sell halogen bulbs in the US as much as they used to. But they are 55W 2400k and 65W 3000k H11's

Not sure if caliraised makes led amber fog replacements for 3rd gens, but I’ve always like the look of their pods in the oem fog location.
I don’t think they are street legal though...

Nope. That was my first plan too. I've already got too many lights that I can't use Monday through Friday.

This kit allows you to easily install two Squadron Sports in Amber Wide Cornering in the OEM Fog Light Location. You will have at least 2-3x the usable light over OEM. One thing to consider is these are NOT street legal. We do have many customers running them without issues in this pattern but it is up to driver discretion. If you're in an area with very dark back roads these will appear more blinding to oncoming traffic compared to a well-lit street. These are backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty and 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee if you want to give them a shot! :)

Why not just cover the Fog lens with yellow? Either Lamin-x or paint.

I just installed these today, and they are very bright. So bright, I fact, that they bleed above the stock headlight low beams and saturate everything in yellow light. There doesn’t seem to be any columnation or vertical cut-off. While I do like them, and love the way they look, as was mentioned above by Baja Designs, it is definitely clear that these are not street legal. I’m actually afraid to use them at night or in foggy conditions because of how bright they are, in consideration of other drivers. Has anyone any experience with night driving? These lights may only have an off road application. EE0E6C56-8E3E-42DB-A368-34B045A7251A.jpg

They are not DOT and are therefore illegal for on road use. Off-Road use only.

I plan on an update to that halogen thread this month, which will push output higher at a lower wattage not necessitating a harness.

Baja Designs squadrons, while producing some of the best quality lights with great low color temps, are not safe for street use. The wide cornering beam emits massive glare above the would be horizon (they have none) and should be considered for off road use only. This does not have anything to do with brightness, it has to do with beam pattern.

Cali Raised Pods produce a spot beam, which emits glare in all directions and is not safe for street use. This is also a very limited beam pattern for the fog location, which typically should use a wide spread beam.

Yellow filters on LED lights really hurt output. A yellow filter (lens) works by only letting long wavelength yellow light through. Halogens produce plenty of long wavelength yellow light, which many do not like, so while filtering out white light with a yellow filter reduces output, it is not to the level of putting a yellow filter on an LED which has very little yellow light to begin with. LEDs primarily produce light in the white/blue spectrum, yellows filters filter out white/blue spectrum leaving significantly reduced output from the original LED source.

I’ve got 22 pods on a fog rack lined up which I am doing extensive testing on.

Totally agree with not using BD lights on the street. I put in some 55W HID's and the light was nice but being a truck I noticed they were melting retinas in compact cars and felt bad so I took them out. Back to halogens. I like the idea of the h9 in h11 as projector shouldn't glare like reflector. But I await your update on the ultimate headlight upgrade.
