Rear Diff Lock Anytime Mod 3rd Gen DEVELOPMENT

Absolutely.

 

Has anyone unplugged it at the diff and just run a power and ground from an Spod or another switch like that? I am wondering if that'd mess any abilities up or throw codes. I am going to get the Harrop Front E locker and I'll be wiring it up to my Spod, just wondering if i'd be able to do the same in the rear.

 

Short answer yes... not any more difficult than installing a remote start

 

I love reading about Mods, there are some smart guys here- but all this Computer controlled crap gives me a headache. Makes me miss the good ole days 1979! locked on demand!

My co workers though I was crazy when they saw me cutting up the front bumper, and the bed to put on my front bumper and high clearance rear. I also did some wire work to put in bed lights. Not afraid to mod as long as I know what need to be done and how to do it safely.

 

Nobody has as far as I know. In factory condition, it doesn't get 12v based on our research. It gets about 75% of 12v when unlocked, and 50% of 12v when locked.
We don't know if it is ok with the higher current 100% of the time. I certainly wouldn't put 12v on it.

It will throw a code if the resistance isn' there on startup. Got to put a resistor back on the ECU side if you were to do what you suggest


[Edit: this circuit as drawn can be powered by any 12v source as drawn. But no guarantee it works yet]

 

Only reason I mention it, is I don't think anybody else has done my 2wheel lo mod which is easier than this, and more useful (to me), IMHO. So I wonder if people will actually attempt this.

 

2lo mod I should look into that. Much cheaper than going dual cases just to have 2lo. I miss my old 4Runner with 4 sticks.

 

I am hoping to do the 2 LO mod this weekend actually. I have the relay and wire I need to do it, just need to find the time.

 

Please post up how it goes, or if you find any errors or differences (Especially on MT as I have auto). If I can make instructions better I will.

The schematic as drawn has circuits for 2 lights to indicate the status of the anytime lock. I did this because I can't figure out any way to use the existing locker dash light without throwing codes. These aren't electrically necessary. What does everybody think. Or rather one color light with a flasher for unlocked and solid on for locked. Or just use switch illumination.

Switch illumination. Keep it as simple as possible. Locate switch top of steering column, or by the opening to the left of steering wheel, near the cargo light switch... Did I mention I'm SUPER EXCITED about this!!

Any pics of your bench model? That may help with suggestions...

 

I agree with the illumination. Makes it fool proof and no guessing. I’ve wanted this for awhile now so super stoked !!

 

Bench model is just some Amazon boxes right now, some opened and some still enroute. I drew the schematic I posted a few days ago purely generated from my mind looking at the truck schematics and the few tests we did by disconnecting things on the truck. Next step will be to assemble the parts to the schematic and see how it works on the bench (get some values for the resistors). Then connect it to the diff (at the diff, not at the dash yet) and see how it works.

Need more help with what you guys want to for feedback on the anytime diff status to tell the operator that the 'Anytime Lock is turned on but not yet locked' and 'Anytime lock is turned on and is locked'.
Is this not important to people (to have a light giving feedback) and we skip it all together?, or do you want to try and use the switch internal illumination for that feedback? If the switch only has a single light circuit color, do you want it to flash initially, then be on constant? Or do we want to skip illumination, and wire in a buzzer? Or buzzer for 'unlocked' and light on and buzzer turns off when locks?

Help me out guys. Go pick online what switch you would actually use for the location you would want to put it on your truck for this mod. (Possible examples: Air on Board, or ch4x4). Get the schematic for the illumination of the switch. Post it up.

Next, tell me what you guys want for 'anytime lock' cockpit feedback (buzzers, lights, skip it, etc).

 

I wondered about a rotary switch. By nature they’re usually a little on the bulky side so I’ll do some research and see if I can find anything that wouldn’t be terrible to mount

 

Ideally a light on the dash (blinking when switch is hit, solid when locker engages) but if that's not possible the same on the actual switch.

 

No buzzers
