I will say this, I had a brand new clutch installed backwards on my 04 once, it drove fine for a short while but then it started acting up and within a few days it was completely toast (looked like those pics). Toyota took it apart and told me the shop had installed it backward.

Right? Which would coincide with how scorched it was when they removed it. Maybe i'm wrong, but I feel like it would have been pretty obvious to me much sooner had I been bee-boppin' around town with a clutch in that sort of shape.

Full disclosure, guys. I was cheating on this thread a little bit, and was cross-posting this in the 2nd gen main forum so that I could get as much exposure/people's ideas as possible. What do you guys think of this idea?

Hah, I posted just before (above a few posts) my experience with a backward clutch. Interesting.

Mine wss an aftermarket Competition Clutch that a small cheap shop put in for me, and rushed the job. All was well for a few days, but within 1000 miles I knew something was up. A couple weeks afterward and it felt like my new clutch had 200k on it. Took it into Toyota and sure enough, backward clutch.

Sorry, eon_blue, I thought that was posted by someone in the other thread as well. I think perhaps this is more than a coincidence, eh?

In your situation, you had Toyota in a position where they could easily blame someone(though to be fair, it was that shop's fault). However, in my situation, if the onus doesn't fall on me, it falls on Toyota themselves. I doubt they're eager to accept that.

So what do I do to convince them that they dropped the ball(or at least someone on involved in the assembly process did)?

True, they aren't likely to admit that they (or their company) messed up. You could try taking the clutch plate into another shop (or a few) and get their opinion on it...I'm no expert but I'm betting that any transmission specialist could tell if it was put in backward by looking at it. Get them to vouch for you and you'll have a better chance with Toyota to have them take care of it under warranty. Or call corporate directly with the info from other mechanics and see if they'll approve the repair with the dealer for you. If you can get corporate on your side they'll fall in line quickly. Of course, it could go either way and it would have to be pretty clear that it was in fact installed backward.

I was pretty much fucked, the shop that installed mine wouldn't own up to it and I eventually got them to reimburse me for the work but not the $800 for the clutch. And then I had Toyota put a stock one in for me because I needed my truck back quick and needed it done right. That set me back a few G's....was a frickin nightmare

Welcome! That is one fine looking vehicle! Reverse seems to get easier over time.

I went from a 5 speed to a 6 speed Scion years ago, was too embarrassed to admit that I didn't know how to use the 6 speed reverse so I spent the first few days reversing by driving up a neighbor's driveway and rolling backward in neutral....

Mine rattles too. I've also noticed that from 1 to 2nd you can't lug it. If you do it seems to lack power even if you floor it. 3rd thru 6th full power band though

For whatever reason, I can do the same on the stock tune. Weird, I know.

Ok guys, here's an update. Tonight in my neck of the woods we got about 9 inches of snow in a few hours, killed the power in a lot of places and made the roads impassable to most. Except me. I've helped un-stuck about 6 people and not once have I even been close to in trouble. This photo was a few hours ago. She received the nickname "The Plow" tonight by someone I helped out. This truck makes what was formerly a no-go into a go. Saved the day-picked up the last can of kerosene at Walmart when nobody else could.

Great way to start off! These things are awesome in the snow. I through some sand bags in the back and put some ko2s on and it’s pretty mean. Got about 3’ in 3 days about a week ago and didn’t even flinch. Glad your having fun!

I guess I need to look into this OV tune. I have about 4-5' of snow from the last few storms. I deliver utility poles for the power companies. So they don't want to hear excuses. Drove thru a foot with no issues, just the occasional rub on the trim under the bumper. My General Grabbers did their job nicely. I've been a long time KO 2 fan, but the accountant(aka Wife) wouldn't budge on my tire wheel budget.

You deliver utility poles with your Tacoma? I've got to see a picture of that.
