Im wanting a Magnetic Grey 2018 or 2019 tacoma. I dont think I will offroad extreme enough to warrant needing a locker, I know the scoop screams bro since its purely aesthetic but I do like the look with the matching fenders aswell.. My main question is, if i plan to give the truck a 3-4" lift is getting the offroad pointless since ill replace the shocks anyway?

Get an OR. I said the same thing when I first wanted a Tacoma...”I won’t do a lot of off-roading...” I ended up getting a sport and started taking it out in the dirt and really enjoyed it. If I were to do it again, it would be an OR. I haven’t needed a locker or crawl control but it’d be nice to have if I ever needed it. Plus...as they say “looks fade, it’s whats on the inside that counts.” Haha

I might mention I will be getting a Manual Transmission, i dont think those come with crawl control.. What makes the OR worth it over the sport if I lift it? The only mechanical upgrade to the OR making it better offroad is really the shocks but if i lift an OR or Sport those get replaced anyway... I know the OR has a locker but thats really for extreme conditions id never be in a NEW truck. Even when its not new thats what the ATV toys are for. SO with a lift and not needing a locker what makes the OR better?

The A-trac. It’s the manual version of crawl control. Same traction as crawl control except the driver controls speed and gear.

Appreciate all the info, still unsure what the concensus is. What makes the offroad better than a sport if both have lifts with the same shocks? What is better about the offroad then?

There’s about 1,000,001 threads about this very thing. But long story short. OR has locker and sport is better on the road and hood skewp.

A-trac, locker, softer suspension for off-roading.

You're either paying an extra 5k for a scoop or 5k for real truck stuff.

Resale. OR is more desirable down the road.

I am in the northeast. It seems in most of these threads, you have to know what you want the truck to do. I have a sport,MT, and I could not drive the truck to its limitations. I would never need an inclinometer....I put on 45,000 miles a year. I like the handling and looks of the sport. If I was out west, and putting the sport through what half of the pics on this site do, I would need the OR. don't know if this helps or hurts your decision.

They're both great trucks and I think you'd be very happy in either. If you prefer the look of the sport, get the sport. Even if you do start off-roading, the sport is still a very competent 4-wheeler. While it's nice to know that the locker is there if you need it, I wouldn't call it a deal breaker. I can only think of a couple of times that I've ever actually "needed" a locker, in 30 years of back country driving. And if your needs change, you can always go with an air locker down the road.

I have an MT OR. I have best of both world's!

Honestly if there was a $3k price difference between the two then I could justify the sport. Buts it's like paying the same price for a tv from the 90s but has really nice chrome trim, or getting a plain new tv with 4k.

Side note, if you really like the scoop I'm not judging, but you can't deny you're getting less for about the same price.

Shocks are not the same between the two.

If you plan on doing the city / highway thing, get the sport.

If you plan on hitting the dirt, get the off road.

Literally went through this last month. Honestly, get the OR. Its more than just a locker. Better, more powerful brakes, better off road suspension, ATRAC or Crawl Control/MTS. Also, many don't say this but the OR is actually 1" lifted higher than SR/Sport stock so you're sort of lifted over other tacomas right off the lot. I love the scoop and the sports do LOOK better, but as I was told here many times you can easily find/upgrade the looks later on. And the OR looks way better in person, I also noticed. The 2018 also has the new grille which looks way nicer than previous years.

o_O People don't say that it's higher than the Sport because that isn't true...

I could be mistaken because honestly I just read it on here... but I could swear I read the OR suspension is 1" higher off the lot.

You are mistaken. Sport/OR/SR5 all have the same ride height. Only the SR is lower.

Maybe you're thinking of the Pro which is apparently higher in the front.
