I bought an Actron OBD II scanner a few years ago for my old 2000 tacoma. I just tried it out on my 08 tacoma and it keeps getting link errors.

I found this on the Actron web site...

""Note: Many 1996 and newer vehicles (notably heavy-duty trucks) are equipped with the 16-pin OBD II connector, but they do not link with OBD II scanners. Plugging one of our scanners into a non-compliant vehicle will not damage the vehicle or the tool. A Link Error message will be displayed on the scanner.""

Has anybody tried reading the codes on our trucks?

I have a GPS plugged into one outlet and a cell phone charger in the other...and they both are working...So im guessing the fuse is good.

I found this out too on another site...

It says all 2008...and my scanner is not CAN capable i dont think.

CAN or Controller Area Network is a new serial communication language especially suited for networking "intelligent" devices as well as sensors and actuators within a system. As vehicles transition to more sophisticated electronic systems- to reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel efficiency, on-board computers will be required to handle significantly more data. (Electronic throttle control, steering and braking systems are three common examples.) CAN provides a much faster data link between the computer and each vehicle system, much as a DSL connection provides today's consumers faster data transfer than do dial-up Internet services. The EPA has mandated that all vehicles sold domestically be CAN-equipped beginning with the 2008 model year. It is projected that about 14% of all vehicles on the road will be CAN-equipped in 2008.

Ity's pretty much a paperweight as far as using it for your truck goes.

Actron didn't seem to be open with the CAN abilities of this scanner. I would suggest calling them an seeing if they could maybe update the firmware.

Just to make sure all the bases are covered, you do have the IGN to the on postion right?

Yeah I just called them and they told me to upgrade to the CP9180.

It is compliant with 2008 and higher and includes a USB cable for future upgrades.

Advance still has the 50% off sale on code readers, i might pick one up just to have it.

I have the CP9135 model and have used it several times on my 2007 and my father’s 2009 successfully. However, my wife’s 2012 Sienna AWD had idiot lights come on and when I tried to use the scanner I kept getting the link failures. Checked fuses, none blown. Tried it on my Tacoma and had link failures there too! Worked before, so I called the toll free number in the manual and it was Bosch repair. They told me it would be replaced under warranty but mine is more than a year old. They said I would have to buy another one, they will not repair them. Did some research and I’m going to get a BlueDriver tool. Works on my daughter’s Subaru too.
