Are you talking about the air dam? It is just held on with screws in nut clips. If you are catching it on stuff, even snow, it be good to remove it. It will do damage if it gets torn loose.

Mine is off, but I will put it on for any long road trips.

 

Is there a noticeable difference in mpg with it on?

 

I took mine off with less than 1k on the odo, so I can't say for sure. My MPGs increased a bit during break in and have leveled off at just shy of 20mpg average (probably 70-30 city/highyway split in this hilly area).

Other folks say that it either doesn't change at all and others say that it is good for 1 or 2 MPG.

It is an easy experiment to try.

I put the screws back in the nutclips so that I didn't loose any.

 

Purchased my 2017 Taco access cab this past August. I had hoped for a six speed but the Toyota dealer here in Palo Alto said that ~95% of truck purchases are for automatics in the area. My test drive ended up being in a Taco with an automatic transmission. I found that at highway speed the shifting patterns are unpredictable if not erratic which convinced me to wait for a six speed rather than the impulse purchase the day of the test drive. Having owned three other Toyota 4x4 (1992, 1996, 2000) pickups I can say with a degree of personal assuredness that the shifting on my 2017 is by far the smoothest of all of them. I'm really pleased with my choice. An aside here... I think that my 2017 is the first one I can think of where the estimated mpg was actually less than the automatic versions. Any input?

 

My Scion had less estimated MPGs than it's automatic counterpart. These days, automatics are first and foremost designed with efficiency in mind, gone are the days of when manuals dominated in the MPG arena. Automatics are almost always quicker off the line nowadays too, whereas it used to be if you had a manual you would be faster. Autos have come a long way.

However, one thing an auto will never have over a manual is the number of smiles per gallon...a manual always has and always will win in that department.

Plus I think it's easier for them to measure MPGs with more precision with autos...with manuals it really depends on who is driving it.

The MPG difference is due to gearing:


Even with a 4.88 gear swap, the AT is still higher than the MT.

That said, I can hit the EPA numbers with an MT. In an AT, they are goals, not destinations.

For the minor difference at the pump (if any in real life), gimme joy behind the wheel.

 

Ok I believe I've seen it posted in here before. Which one of you has figured out the best way to eliminate the creek in the clutch? There has to be a specific lube point. It's heard, so far, mainly when letting off in first gear or reverse

 

Use Disc Brake Grease on all the pivot points and it will cure the old barn door creak.

 

You mean like the CRC red spray anti squeak lube? Thanks BTW

 

No, grab some Disc Brake Grease, it is a high temp grease that will stay where you put it.

AutoZone has little packets of it so you don't need to buy a container, i also find that the long wooden Q-Tips help in reaching all the pivot points.

 

I may have some in one of the tool boxes if not I'll swing by and pick some up. I got stuck in traffic for a 2hr commute home this evening and it got annoying

 

get some latex or nitrile gloves and get the grease fully inside the coil.

 

Just picked up my 2018 OR MT last week. Now in Moab. Still have my off-road training wheels on but have already driven stuff that would have cracked my old Subaru in half. Thanks for all the info TWers, helped me seal the deal.
