Fun stuff. Yeah I wanted that skewp too. Spent way too much time going back and forth. End of day get what works out best for you and you will forget why you were looking at the other one when your having so much fun with whichever you decide to get. If getting the upgrade package both have the color coded bumper. If not you get a chrome on the OR. The black fenders on OR look awesome on lighter colors while color coded on sport much better on dark IMO. I decided on the sport after 3 months agonizing. Asked for cement. Only OR was available in NE in cement. should've asked first I guess. So I got an OR. no skewp and I couldn't care less! Good luck!

I get it you got a rear locker and proud of it. Most taco owners are daily drivers and would not ever need those two features to haul stuff from home depot. They buy it for looks, which means color match and scoop. That is the value they would prefer over the unneeded rear locker and crawl. Not sure why you dont get that

I know they aren't the same, I was just saying if i lift either truck i will be replacing the shocks anyways... If the truck is lifted the only thing the OR has over the Sport is a locker.

Also if you lift and level, that skewp might actually impair your vision a bit? Not sure it would bother you but I did notice it when test driving and that was with the angle. Of course if you stay with the wheels you get the 17s on a sport which will look better when lifted vs the roller skate look some seem to refer to on lifted 16 inch OR wheels.

Ty, first answer i've seen that truely answered. I like offroading as in camping/fishing/shooting but other than that i dont really think ill need a locker.. But it would be nice for that one time I do..Does lifting the truck void the warranty?

Ya the suspension parts but if you get it professionally installed, they will just replace the warranty you lost with toyota

That's it, you're off the New England summer get together. Haha

Kidding. I need to get back on that thread to see if there's progress. I'll give it til the end of April and I have emergency backup plans for us.

You might actually like the ride of the OEM OR shocks and keep them on the truck longer.

Even if you don't there is a decent market for OR take off suspension parts for some of the SR /SR5 and Sport owners who are looking for an inexpensive upgrade without looking to lift. Helps recoupe your cost a little bit when you do lift.

You don't see people looking to buy Sport take off suspensions.

However it's your decision to buy what you think is better for your needs, not us to convince you to buy what we chose based on our needs. Sport or Offroad, it doesn't really matter to me what you decide to buy as long as you LIKE what you buy.

Good luck in your decision, I know I've been very happy with mine.

I'm curious as to any demographics showing number of Sport vs OR sold in different areas. Anybody?

I don't think Toyota releases that breakdown of sales.

I just went through this exact same things, as many of of new buyers do. I made the decision based on a few questions I asked myself:

    1. How many times in the past did I go "off-roading" in my previous trucks/cars? Answer: None.
I had a 99 Chevy Blazer. I went camping a few times a year, but on gravel roads at worst. So I don't need all the extra off-road items. And for if I do go off-road, the Sport in 4x4 will be more than enough for anything I will be doing. It's still a highly capable 4x4 in the Sport package.

    2. Do I like the hood scoop looks over the plain hood? Answer: Yes!

    3. Do I like the painted flairs or plastic? Answer: I actually like the look of the black ones to give some contrast.
That being said, I can add aftermarkets if I really want for pretty cheap.

    4. Which ride quality do I like better? Answer: Off-road.
While I do all my driving on pavement I liked the feel of the OR better on my test drives. It felt more grounded and beefy.

    5. Will I be upgrading the suspension? Answer: Not sure
The Sport suspension is not bad. It rides like my wifes SR5 4Runner, which is far nicer than my loaded 99 Blazer. If I wouldn't have test drove both, I probably wouldn't have cared. But if I do decide I want to add bigger tires, I'd be upgrading the suspension to something better than the factory OR anyway.

So for me, this all added up to getting the Sport. Your answers may guide you towards the OR. Either way you get a great truck, so it's a win/win.
    Good luck!

Some of us can’t get an OR in what we want, specifically an acesss cab, long bed, manual. So the sport is the next option.

I had the same thought process Sport or OR. I ended up getting the Sport. If and when I need a locker I prefer an air locker over an electronic locker.

You're not at risk voiding the warranty on anything but the parts you replaced. Powertrain is still GTG. Toyota dealerships are pretty mod friendly because so many guys do it.

I'm from PA I have a friend that bought a 16 Off Road. I decided I wanted one. I worked with a local dealer over the phone and when I got to see it they thought I wanted a different truck which happened to be a sport. I did drive both of them and I liked the look of the painted bumpers and fender flairs. Plus I loved the non functional scoop. Dealer worked out a good deal on a 17 sport that was better then the deal on the 16 OR. Boy am I glad I did. My friend had nothing but trouble with his 16 almost from day 1. The rear end made lots of noise, the 2 panels that make up he hood separated (the glue that held them together came unglued) the hood skin would flap in the wind at highway speeds. Then to top it al off the rocker panel started to rust. I'm told that the rear noise was from the locker, the hood issue doesn't happen on sports because of the scoop. I still waiting to see about the rocker panel rust. I'm glad I went with the sport but I'm thinking the next one will be a PRO and ill get the flares painted . . .
