"Clunk' or harsh downshift. I think mine does the same thing. I think it is fairly common. That is why I am checking my fluid level. That and peace of mind.

I am starting to think it the way they designed the transmission. My fluid is full and still does it when cold. I only have 600 miles on it so I am giving the 2k miles it takes to learn my habits to see what changes.

If the clunk you’re hearing is there when harsh axle changes occur, check the u-joint on the axle as it may need grease, or be failing. Get low on the side of the truck, looking at the differential and have some one start, put in forward gear (brakes on), neutral, reverse(brakes on) and listen and look for the clunk.

Auto-Transmissions are fluid and should not clunk. There are valves that open/close, which can cause abrupt sensations, but shouldn’t be clunks.

I can assure you I didn't drain the transmission fluid. Toyota is giving me an 8 yr 125k extended warranty. I am just afraid if my transmission does fail they will make up an excuse to not cover it.

Checked my fluid this morning per the procedures in post #18. I first put a quart in and pinned the cooler bypass. I drained out about a quart. Fluid level was fine. Thanks to Splitbolt for the procedures and gearcruncher for the advice.

In for the results . I would like to hear from other 2018 owners .
Let us know if the 18,s are filled to spec or low on fluid
In post 18 , Mr. Splitbolt provided the instructions . Its not hard to check your own fluid .
Do I change the Low fluid poll and add the 2018 Tacoma,s to the list ?
There are now 2 members with 2018 Tacomas who have had low fluid .
Need to hear from other members who own the 18 Taco .
In a small community such as Tacoma World , I beleive 10 trucks low on fluid will be enough of a deciding factor ( baseline ) to comfortably add the 18 to the low fluid poll .

If I don't want to go through the hassle of pinning the obd port and putting the truck into temp check mode - couldn't I just pin the thermostat and monitor the pan temp on the fusion app until it reaches 95*F and check it at the point?

This is why we tried to get you guys to watch the technician perfoming the level check .
If you read the low fluid poll , there are some good posts about dealership techs saying one thing , yet doing another hint hint .
Painting the overflow bolt was an excellent idea !!
You can always slide under the truck and have a peek to see if the paint is ripped up . At least you will know for certain the manual fluid level check was done somewhat properly .

    Sure !!
There is no reason why you couldnt do the fluid level check this way . Its going to get you very similar results as doing the full procedure .
If you do find the trans low , dont add fluid ...Off to the dealer you go for proper warranty documentation of the issue

The last time I wanted them to check it, they said they don't do checks unless there is a failure in some way. Instead, they applied the first tsb.

It have 42k on it now, and it's never really given me problems, but if it IS low then I would like to at least top it off.

I followed Mr Splitbolt’s instructions at 92miles on my 2018. It was filled to spec.
