Get a Tom Woods, one piece driveshaft. Should be less than $500

Hoping i can get some help. For those that got both the ujoints and driveshaft replaced under the warranty, what was the reason that the driveshaft was replaced?

My 2008 is at Toyota right now and they did replace the ujoints, but they are saying that the driveshaft is not covered under the warranty even though it does need to be replaced. They are saying that its normal wear and tear, not because of the ujoints. I even went to another dealership to ask and apparently they have never replaced a driveshaft because they offered no guidance.

I would file a complaint with Toyota customer service. They are admitting your U Joints are bad and have extended the warranty to cover them. How can they say the bad U Joints had nothing to do with the drive shaft being bad? The warranty enhancement states that if the drive shaft is bad in addition to the U Joints it is to be replaced under the warranty. Open a complaint and let the dealer know you did.

My rear-most U-Joint went bad late last year in my 10 DCLB. I didn't know about a warranty, and didn't get a letter. It started causing really significant vibration, so I went searching.

I pulled the drive shaft and brought it to a local specialist. I was expecting this to take 3+ days and about $500 for a rebuild, but to my surprise they had it done in about 4 hours for about $250. Installed all new sealed u-joints throughout the 2 piece driveline. Dude told me "those things will outlast your truck, I guarantee it". Put it on, vibration is gone and all is good so far.

I am still out money and the annoyance of having to deal with it, but overall, it was an easier job than I was expecting.

So having to end up paying to have the driveshaft replaced, I asked if they can explain again why it wasn't covered. The rep told me that the driveshaft would have to literally be broken in two in order for it to be covered. That they have only done one and that Toyota sent out an auditor to verify it. I don't know how much of all of that I believe, but I probably won't be going to that dealership anymore.

    Customer Support Program Details:
This Customer Support Program provides coverage as it applies to the Propeller Shaft Universal Joints. The specific
condition covered by this program is a drivetrain vibration and/or drivetrain noise.

If the vehicle continues to be driven with the aforementioned condition, there is risk of severe damage to the propeller shaft. If the condition is verified, the vehicle will be repaired with new Propeller Shaft Universal Joint(s) under the terms of this Customer Support Program. In limited instances the Propeller Shaft Assembly may be replaced if damaged due to the universal joint condition described above.

You should file a complaint with Toyota CS (1 (800) 331-4331). They should give you a case number. The dealer is saying normal wear and tear but how many miles are on your truck? My truck has almost 160,000 and the driveshaft is not damaged. I drove it with the vibration but not for very long. They should have to prove conclusively that the defective universal joints did not contribute to the failing driveshaft. Maybe they can and maybe they can't but if you don't push the issue you will never know. Tell them you take good care of your truck and there was nothing wrong with the drive shaft until after the u joints fail. I have seen others who got their driveshaft replaced for no charge and i highly doubt they were literally broken in two. You have nothing to lose by opening a complaint and you may get reimbursed. I hope you have another dealer nearby for future work.

Well TW, I had started a separate thread 'Warranty Enhancement Propeller Shaft' about the same time this thread popped up. I figured I would update you all on my situation. Today I received a full reimbursement check for the replacement of my shaft, work was done 2-3 years ago. I sent in all paperwork requested in the letter the day I started the similar thread. My truck suspension is stock, just to let you know

I actuallty had my driveshaft replaced by Toyota back in 2012. I took it in to have a u-joint replaced and they called me later that day saying that my driveshaft was bent. At the time I was 2 years outside of the factory warranty but only had 38K miles on the truck so Toyota paid for the complete drivshaft assembly but I had to pay for the labor. I wonder if I could be reimbursed for the labor.

Just thought you were talking about something else since you said "phase".
Driveshaft section phasing vs what it seems like you're talking about, correct driveline angles.

I took my 07 Taco in for the drive shaft inspection..... they didn't think anything was wrong with it.... I was hoping this was the cause of the weird humming i've been hearing

I am however getting a new frame. :) I started to explain where the rust hole was and he interrupted me and said "Lemme guess, drivers side, up front near the exhaust manifold" He nailed it.

Took mine and got new u-joints and vibration and noise completely gone. When i made the appointment they asked if i wanted frame inspected while they had it and i said no. ( I have until 2/20/2021 for it to fail) They inspected it anyway and said they found a hole not big enough to fail it but to come back in six months to a year and it will be big enough to fail. I didn't want it inspected because i was afraid they would want to put CRC goop on it but they never mentioned it. I don't want that shit on my frame just to keep it from failing until the enhanced warranty runs out. I should be getting a new frame sometime in the next year or so.

New joints are completely sealed, driveshaft replacement is only for physical damage caused by faulty joints.

Ya'll I just got my letter notifying me about this problem. Had my frame replaced about a year ago. I've always had an issue with my steering wheel shaking when I get up to around 60 mph and goes away when I get up to a higher speed. Is this a symptom of a problem included in this "customer support" letter?
