Just spoke with my service advisor and casually asked if there was a fix out for the howling. He called back, said they just released the TSB, and ordered the parts. I'd welcome any benefit from the TSB! I'll update once the TSB has been performed.

So I had my gears swapped to 4.88s by ECGS at around 8k.mi. My rear end has been trouble free until today, i took it on for 30k mile service. Now I have the howl issue. Not sure if they changed the fluids...

Has nothing to do with dluid and everything to do with axle housing attachment to rear spring and rear spring design. It causes resonance under certain load. Please read the TSB. If it were as simple and cheap as changing the fluid then they would have done so.

It seems like Toyota can never get parts?? I mean the first fiasco was the leaking rear differential. They made people wait like a month+ for a damn gasket, now they don't have parts for the TSB??

Google "supply chain management" for a company that makes 16K of something a month that has around 7,500 parts per unit. So, 7,500 × 16,000 = 1,200,000 parts... a month. Let that sink in for a minute.

They most likely did not anticipate so many of us participating in the TSB. I would assume it would be almost impossible to nail down how many people would need the fix. A month is nothing - I just got 2 recalls fixed on my daughter’s Mazda after waiting over a year for the parts. After going nuts on corporate they moved me up in line to get my parts. After my experience with getting repairs for that Mazda, Toyota is looking pretty darn good FWIW.

Mine used to do it only while coasting/deceleration. Now it does it when feathering the throttle as well. You can’t slow down without doing one of those things unfortunately haha

I’m at about 1,900mi. Had the howl from mile 20. Howl while feathering the throttle started around 1,450mi.

I think they know they need to step it up because much needed competition is about to heat up.

I really and truly don't think some of you understand how the process works or the pace of making a change!

Let's say your company (a Toyota vendor) makes a portion of the rear spring. You are cranking out 16K of them a month. Toyota give you a lead time of three months to start cranking out 17K of them a month. Why three months? Because you have to buy additional steel and get it shipped and delivered. You need to train those new guys to work on 2nd shift. You have to schedule trucks. You have to get more shipping containers. You have a thousand things to do in order to build an extra thousand a month.
Maybe you think there is extra inventory? No there is not.
And this is just one part of the spring!

Guys, no big OEM can just "wish" something and it happens. It takes a lot of planning and things move at a glacial pace for any large company for anything. There are tons of vendors who have to coordinate with you.
Bottom line it takes time. A lot of time.

He's correct. This has been happening since late 2015 and its now 2018. Over three years and they are just attempting to fix it.

Their MO: dealership denies they hear anything, multiple trips and conversations later, they might hear something, after more conversations with the manager, they give it to a senior tech, he hears it but he's stumped, so they bring in a regional "expert". Here's where they may or may not throw parts at the problem, but once thats done, they will tell you "its a normal characteristic of the vehicle" as if that absolves them of anything. Once that happens you get mad and call corporate. Corporate looks into your case, may ask you to take it back for more research or try a different dealership. After that's exhausted, if you are polite and business-like (and lucky) they may offer you an extended warranty. Now don't get too excited--that warranty is worthless you see, because for every.single.issue with the truck you have to start back at the top of this paragraph.

Then FINALLY after years of waiting a TSB appears. You eagerly take it in (they dont call you even though they know you have the issue). They tell you that there isn't a TSB. You press them. "Oh there is a TSB, but it doesn't apply to you". You press them and the manager. After arguing and pressing further they take it in to execute the TSB. But there aren't parts so you have to wait (maybe with a loaner if you press hard enough). Once they finally get the parts you take it in, they take all day, dont finish and ask you to come back the next. They finally finish the TSB, but executed it poorly--"your model doesn't get the X-widget thats just for the BLAH models". Obviously they are wrong and can't read a fairly clear TSB. So you print it out and show them. They take it back and you start all over about 3 sentences in to THIS paragraph.

You get your truck back. Finally. You drive it home and the issue is still happening. Maybe a little less; maybe not. Jump back to paragraph one.

This is the life of a 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma owner. If you dont want to do that, trade it in for a better vehicle.

    Yes.

Not unlike Subaru Outback owners with acknowledged faulty transmissions that had to wait almost 7 years (in some cases) for a TSB and an extended warranty....when many feel that a recall is needed.

I’m not sure who you are talking to. I said they need to step it up meaning in terms of quality. I completely understand that they can’t just waive a wand and have the parts available but they do have to find a way to better balance production, recalls, TSBs, and repairs. If they can’t then they may need to focus on their quality management process. I think Toyota knows they need an even better quality vehicle because, like it or not, the midsize market is about to get competitive quickly. The Taco will still sell but the days of blind brand loyalty are a thing of the past.

2 years in and we finally got our recalls done on a 16 Mazda CX-5. Then they told me they had no ETA on a heater core (read important part) which needed to be replaced. I went nuts on them and they magically found one. I’ll gladly wait my month for the Taco TSB and will be all smiles knowing that it will either get fixed or the resonance greatly reduced. I understand a lot of the frustration but some of this can be attributed to sorry dealers when you get the kind of crap Kisses got. Peace....

I can hear a super faint low hum when i feather the throttle with the radio turned all the way down. Honestly probably would have ever noticed it if it wasnt for reading this forum.

Not you lol. Some here think getting something done with a huge company is like getting something done with a small company. It's not. It takes forever and it's not just Toyota. It every huge company.
