On the plus side, I saw no signs posting trails were seasonally closed

 

guys if the gates are shut, they clearly arent wanting people on the trail.... it's our responsibility to stay the trail and not "go around" gates

it sucks

but I would rather avoid hitting certain trails a few times than for it to be permanently shut down to all 4x4s

my recommendation would be to adjust the location to an open part of the trail or a different trail entirely... but that's just my $0.02

 

Yeah, that's what I think too. So I'm not too sure about going there.
Randy did send me the coordinates for the trail they entered, which is just off private land owned by one of his friends. However, the trailhead did have a closed red gate there also. They just drove around it. And it is nowhere near the lakeside camping area

 

When you went last time, did the trails you wheeled have gates?

 

yep, when we ran Sleepy Creek, the gates were open... maybe someone can call the ranger station and talk to them about it

 

To be clear the trail head isn't on private land. His house just happens to be near it so I use that in my GPS to get me in the vicinity.

 

If we can't go there, then I'm gonna plan to camp somewhere else. That sucks.

Fully agreed. That's how you lose priveledges.

 

so can we dedicate someone to contact the ranger station for that district, see if its open and plan from there. mean while lets come up with a back up plan

 

The trail we take has an access around the gate. It starts no where near the lake but ends close to the entrance which makes for a good day of wheeling before you get there. The side we enter is always "closed" because they don't want you to exit from that side but the gates on the other end of our entrance are open which signals to me that the trail is open @PyritePirateBill

 

yea we had to deal with this a lot in Colorado (people are REALLY big on Stay the Trail out there) but I saw a BUNCH of trails close down by the forestry service due to irresponsible off roaders that decided they would make their own paths and / or drive where they were not suppose to drive.

 

alright guys im going to try and call the district 2 ranger station and see what turns up on sleepy creek. being a WV native and working for the forest service over the summers. I know that if they want the trail closed they will shut all the gates or block them with natural things.

 

Damn dude...do you have extra kidneys on ice somewhere or what? I want to do whatever it is you do for a living.

Hey guys, gonna give first dibs here. Going to sell my four 255/80r17 Cooper ST Maxx that have maybe 6,000 miles on them and are in great condition.
