Inside of your 2nd Gen of course. No other better place for the thread. However, a lot of people are using tablets nowadays for navigation and travel. We discuss this is different threads such as the Expedition threads but it gets thrown around. What tablet do you use and what apps are you using to navigate and track your travels. I recently just picked up a tablet and have downloaded some pretty decent apps for my cross country trip. iOverlander shows some camping spots around the US, road trip Ryan shows some pretty cool locations in the Utah area that i'm using to plan my West trip, etc. etc. Lets hear what you use for your trips.

I downloaded backcountry navigator the purchased version. Has some pretty awesome topo maps available. I tested on galaxy tab a to rocky point mexico 2 weeks ago and kept my trails the entire way. You can also import other trails gpx and kmz files from other people as well.

I'm using an Android Tab Active mounted on a BirdDawgTech Deck and Gaia. Seems to work well enough as long as I download the maps ahead of time. Haven. I haven't tried any of the other navigation apps yet.

I've got an iPad mini that I've recently started to mess around with for navigation. Currently using the free version of Gaia GPS. You can set up everything in a internet browser and it'll sync to the app. Haven't used it too much but I've been pretty impressed with it compared to what I've used in the past.

There are a lot of decent apps for normal on-road navigation. I went through many apps for offroad navigation over the years and wasnt happy with any of them until I found Gaia and bought a membership. Great app.

Since you've been using Gaia, I have a question. Does it have actual voice navigation on it? I've mostly just followed routes by eye on it so far. Haven't really delved too deeply into the app yet.

We use Gaia on all our trips. It works well. You can plan routes, save tracks, and download various versions of topo maps for offline use.

I recently picked up an ipad mini to use for navigating trips in state/national forests.

Specifically looking for offline topo maps.

From what I've experienced with Gaia, it'll do everything you're looking for. The offline and USGS Topo maps are available as part fo their membership that is 19.99/yr.

Only reason I don't have it yet is I haven't started playing around in my truck yet. Waiting for it to get warmed up.

How does adding gpx or kmz files exactly work when exporting them from my computer.. I have a whole mapped out on and offroad route for my trip coming up that I did on Google Earth. Do I need to drop it in a certain folder or just move it over to the micro SD and it should pick up?

    Probably depends on your app.

In backcountry navigator i can go and import trails and waypoints and go right into my download files and grab the trail i want. Then it overlays the file right over the topo map

Arizona -Utah mapped laid out and imported to back country navigator. What's the difference in the demo and free version?

According to their notes in the play store its a 1 time fee... beats gaia's 19.99 per year subscription imo...

    x2 on all of this.

Galaxy Tab A is a great budget tablet. GPS capable with MicroSD card up to 400GB card. I found a used 8" one for $100.
Backcountry nav pro is fantastic. Easy to use and can store a ton of information.
