Not to be rude, but if you need to be talked into buying one, then its not for you.

I can't believe you haven't been bashed from every direction for liking your truck. You're supposed to complain about your mpg (they all get 16 mpg or less and if you say otherwise you're a liar). Your transmission HAS to be a useless piece of junk that shifts constantly and hunts for gears. They even do this when they're shut off and in the garage, that's how bad they are. They also have a disgusting "lean" which has to be corrected with some type of spacer. If you say you don't see it, you're crazy. Don't even think about towing with it. You'll need an entire new spring pack, AALs and airbags to even consider towing. Get up and go? Nope, it's sluggish and you'll never even be able to pass anyone on the highway. A Prius has more power.
Anyone who likes their truck and says they've ever even has a positive experience with it is nuts!

I have a 2017 TRD Auto- I would not buy it again- I would look for a nice 2015. I do not like tranny or engine. Mine has had more issues in 8 months than my gen 2 had in six years which was a noisey fan motor which they replaced and that was it. Read the reviews and see how many complaints there are on the Gen 3- there are tons of them and they are consistently the transmission engine issue. The 3.5 is not a good truck motor and the transmission is junk.

Doesn’t have to. One guy gave his honest opinion that goes along with a lot of folks say. I just need to go test drive one and see for myself how the engine-transmission combo feels. Thanks for all the input dudes, good and bad.

It’s a great truck. I’ve had my trans issues as well. Two TSBs later and it’s good enough now. The real problem is the gearing. The drop off in power going from 4th to 5th gear is noticeable. So when on the highway, it will downshift from 6th to 4th if you hit the gas. If the ‘19 Taco comes out with a new power train option, I would be intrigued. However, I love my ‘16 and have zero regrets about it.

Test drive it a good ways and go up some hills. I test drove mine but really did not notice the issues till after I had it a few days, I can say the transmission has gotten a little better with some miles. Listen for a rear end howl between 40-55 mph and mine has a hesitation on hills while maintaining speeds between 30-55 mph that will cease if I run Shell Vpower 93 octane gas which I can't afford to run all the time- My dealer and Toyota says its normal. I have owned 4 Tacoma's and it ain't normal. The 4.0 is a great motor with more torque and usable horsepower- once again my advice is get a 2014-15 low mileage Tacoma or go full size or maybe one day Toyota will fix the issues.

    Always the same complainers... lol

    Whaaa! Whaa! My transmission!

    Whaaa! Whaa! Gear hunting!

Whaaa! Whaaa! Get up and go!

    Whaaa! Whaaa! Issues!

    Whaa! Whaa! MPGs!

These people will complain about anything.

My previous car was a 600+ RWHP Shelby, this truck is plenty fast for its intended use.

    Transmission, works just fine.

Excellent truck, issue free, do not regret one thing about the purchase.

    Best of luck, OP.

Wow. This is crazy. I went from a 2014 tacoma to a 2017 Golf R and I’m about to pickup a new tacoma next week. Crazy how it’s almost the same story.
