@Porter707 operation unfuckery underway, so far so good. Drive seems OK. I replaced the CMOS battery on the motherboard, but I did not even want to fire up that thing at the risk of potentially limited spins left on the HD. I just wanted straight to backup ASAP. But the HD sounds normal, in my estimation. Thanks for your advice.

I'm down to meet you guys up there for a day trip sunday if nothing comes up this weekend that prevents me from leaving. My buddies wanted to go up saturday but I am already busy saturday evening, so I should be clear for sunday.
