Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Was it pretty straight forward? I can't believe how much they want for that thing. I would like things to be accurate, so in the long run I might bight the bullet.

 

Yea. It was. Gotta have a laptop w/ Windows. Pop the dash apart and plug it in. Easy peasy government cheesy. It was worth it to me

 

Interesting...how much is the hypertech? It fixes both MPG and MPH?

So I put 150 miles on the tires today. Cold filled them last night to 36 psi. They handle pretty well and noise isn't that much more than the stock Off-Road Goodyear Kevlar tires. I do feel like this tire may be a little more "darty" on really rough sections of the highway, but the Taco never felt super sure of itself with stiff crosswinds and highway speeds to begin with (the wind can really push this truck around). Traction is great! I tested out the tires on some ice we had on a side road and it took a lot of effort to get ABS to kick in and from a stop I had a hard time getting them to spin. This wasn't really thick black ice, but it was shining in the early morning sun and I know my trashed Goodyears would not have performed as well (even new they stunk in winter conditions). When I got home from work I backed the truck up and over the small banks of snow where I normally park. I was in 2wd and backed up and over the snow and then several feet, stopped and went forward. I never spun a tire. The Goodyears looked at snow and wanted to spin. Call me impressed and secretly hoping for one more fluke storm to try them out a little more extensively in, or I can wait until next winter.

Side note, anyone else monitor their tire pressures with these tires? I cold filled last night to 36 psi in 20 *F weather and today after driving the fronts warmed all the way up to 39 psi and the rears hit 40 psi. I might lower them a bit more once they cool off to 33 psi to see what they warm up to. I think that might attribute to some of the squirliness I felt later in the day as the tire stiffened. Curios what others are seeing and I might cross post this in the ST Maxx mega thread.

 

I have the same tires. Mine are also a little bit jumpy when warmed to 40psi. You are right about the truck being squirrelly on windy days and bump steering on rough roads. Also, when my ST Maxx's were new they pulled to the right. Now that I have about 8,000 miles on them they pull a little less. The roads in my area are crowned and send you to the right anyway.

 

We have a pretty heavy crown on our roads in NE Ohio. No pulling that I could tell from the tires - the shop I had do the alignment did a great job. I am going to try dropping a few PSI out of the tires to see if that helps. I think I want to target a warm pressure of around 36 psi instead of a cold pressure of 36 psi. I need to do the chalk test too.

 

I had the same issue with the pressure jump. I ended up lowering to 32 cold and when warm hit about 35/36.

 

So I've been wanting 33's for a while, and as my stock tires are still working but starting to show wear a year later I am beginning to save for some new shoes. I'm currently in the process of getting married (only a few months away), moving into a new apartment sortly after and then PCSing a few months after that (thanks Army) I don't want to have the added costs of a lift.

I was thinking some 255/85r16s would be my best bet, any issues off roading, with stock TRD OR suspension?

Not sure if you have read the whole thread or not, if not, it is a good read with a lot of information about the set up that you are looking at. I can definitely relate to that. I am in the "Search" mode as well. There are so man choices and so many different combinations it can be almost overwhelming as to which direction to go in. One day I am all about a 6" drop bracket kit (I have run a lot of these on various vehicles in the past) with 35's, and the next I am set on just going with the tall skinnies on stock suspension and calling it a day. Of course then there are all of the other options in between those two set ups.

I've never once rubbed before or after my lift and even before or after my CMC. I've tried flexing it out as hard as I could and at full turn...

I feel ya on that, one day its an all out overland rig, next day day its a six inch lift to crawl the mall, but I feel like tall and skinnies are a happy medium, and one option where my 5'3 fiance can still get into the truck.....

 

My girl is 5'4 and said that now that I'm running 33"s I can't lift the truck any without putting steps on it for her. P.s good luck at your new station and congrats on getting married.

Did you use a spacer for this? I feel like I remember you saying you might. I have the same suspension setup as you and are looking to run 255's as well.

 

My wife is 5' tall. After the lift she had the same complaint. I told her, don't worry, I have a plan to get you some steps. So, now she is very happy with the @Mobtown Offroad rock sliders. Problem Solved.
