Hey guys I did my research and my problem is like no other.

I have a 2017 tacoma trd off road double cab 4x2

There’s this buzzing sound coming from what I believe is the ecu.

I’ve read other threads saying it’s a plastic clip or the blower motor but it’s none of those. When I step on the gas the buzzing noise intensifies and when I let off it’s still buzzing but a lot less. I’ve looked under the dash and had my wife drive while I tried to locate where the sound is coming from. I’ve checked the notorious plastic clip but it’s not that.

I finally brought it to the dealership today and they told me it’s “normal” for the 17 models. Something about it being the direct fuel injector motors or something.

Doesn’t make much sense to me.
Can anybody help with this or has anybody else experienced this?

Also my buddy just bought a 2017 trd off-road 4x4 and his doesn’t buzz like mine so I’m thinking it’s not “normal”.

    Thank you in advance!

Yes!! Exactly what you're talking about. Im having the same noise coming from that ecm. the dealership said its "normal".
I might cut a slit into the plastic wrap around the wiring harness to see if there are any loose clips in there?
But I highly doubt that's the problem because the buzzing is coming from inside the ECU.

Please keep this thread posted with updates/progress. In my case, it appears to be more noticeable once the vehicle is well-warmed up

I have a 2017 TRD OR 4x4 with 4k miles on it and my ECU is making the same noise. Driving me nuts. I just got back from the local dealer here in Asheville, NC and they told me it was the fuel injectors which simply isn't the case. Two techs "couldn't" hear the noise which is total BS because it makes that same ticking/buzzing noise whether the motor is running or not. My main concern is that something is arcing inside the ECU and the last thing I want is a car fire on the highway. Anyone else concerned about it being a fire risk?

2019 has been doing it for the past 12k miles. Currently at 34k. Dealer said they couldn't hear the noise. I made multiple videos and sent them to my service tech. They said that's perfect and they are going to start digging. They told me it's not normal. Time to start hooking up microphones to find where the noise is coming from. My 2015 sport made random noises but nothing like this. I will keep an update if anyone needs any help. I know exactly what sound you are talking about. It's a mix between a buzzing, stretching and creeking noise. Almost like an old door opening slowly.

Get your ECU flashed up to the latest version. If it is still doing it, the problem is hardware. Toyota wont want to pay under warranty due to the cost and out of warranty will hurt your wallet. Can always hit up a junk yard or just turn up the radio and pretend it is silent.

Might be of interest from you guys. Don't know if it's the same noise but my 2017bhad a buzzing/ticking noise. Increases with acceleration.Bought it in at Toyota of Redlands. Those guys are awesome .they found out that the rubber gasket/boots in the steering column moved due to dried out lubricant.its between the firewall. Long story short they pushed it back but I told then to just replace it on my dime and now no more noise. I now apply silicone lube to make sure its lubed and it doesn't go out of place when turning the wheel.

That actually sounds alot like mine. Only does it when it is warmed up. Noise comes from acceleration and I can sometimes hold the noise if I stay steady at a certain RPM. Put my phone while making a video closer and closer to my feet and sound got louder and louder. Maybe it is the steering and not the ECU I will get them both check out. You guys are awesome. Good to know to have a place to jump on and ask questions and be informed. Happy new year

Mine started like that then it gets louder inside the cabin that it sounds like an old beat up deisel truck. Now its back to being quiet inside. If the dealer can't find anything wrong, you may try what I did after they replaced the rubber thing. I removed the black steeringplastic cover by the firewall held by 4 plastic push in nut. Applied silicone lube on the steering shaft and pushed the rubber down (the one that wraps the steering column with my finger. With the lube, it slides down . Then go test drive, it should be quiet. In hindsight, it might not need replacement. The rubber thing moves up the steering column when the lube dries up.

Ended up being cat converter heat shield. They took out the dash and all the plastics on the driver side and drove it for a day. They tightened it down and hasn't made any noise since. But I'm sure it will get loose overtime. Just wanted to update you guys. Thanks for the help though.

My 2014 started making buzzing noises at 1800 RPMs, it doesn't make noise unless its under load. I'm thinking its the converter shield but we've got too much snow to check it.

I see in my warranty information, it says Catalyst System *Catalytic converter and protector is warranted for 8/80. Is the "protector" the heat shield fastened to the converter, or the heat shield that I'm guessing is above it on the under side of the floor? This sounds to me like the warranty covers this issue. What say you?
