It's a very controversial topic just like same sex marriage. Things don't seem right for either side but at the end, it's the court's decision and we just have to abide by that.

My right is infringed by requiring me to provide proof. Answering, Yes I am an American should suffice. My problem is with having me prove it. This is America, not Russia, or Turkey, or Pakistan where you need to carry your papers.

Complicated subject, perhaps it should be remembered that much of the southwest was part of Mexico before it was annexed by the U.S. However if the opportunity to work wasn't there then it would be hard for anyone to get work thus no reason to cross the border, government needs to get after the employers that hire these people. It's also clear that much of the food industry depends on cheap labour to provide the cheap food so readily available. If you need workers from outside the country like much of the food industry does then they should import them legally on work permits, pick them up at the border and return them when the work is done. Concerning the construction worker, if there was even the semblance of a union among legal workers the union could get after employers using illegals. As to the medical issue, here in Canada we had a problem with illegals using our free(paid by taxes) medical system so we brought in ID cards to stop the Americans from accessing it illegally, doesn't always work but there is a balance between freedom and facism we don't like to cross.;)

The bar analogy is not exactly accurate. The law requires you to provide proof of age in order to get a drink. You go there by choice.

But if you get pulled over while driving or stopped on the sidewalk, then asking for proof of citizenship is unconstitutional. My Drivers license should suffice.

If I don't have an ID when I am a passenger in my friends car then I am SOL under this AZ law

I am 100% behind AZ in this law, and I am disgusted with the way the media is skewing the facts about what the law really states. Some of the responses in here are regurgitated media bullshit. This law is necessary, and fair.

That's just more boogeyman myth. Check out the Census in the Constitution

    oil change...

your right, it is a law to show ID to buy a drink. no one is fussing about that, well excpet the ones who want to do it under age (illegaly)...

when this becomes a law you will be required to show ID if you are pulled over.....oh wait, you already are! how about that?!

why are you so against providing an ID to an officer? just know that when he asks an illegal to do it they cant and will be gone gone.

Have a good weekend. see you monday :D

Not in my case. I am opposed to showing anything other than my drivers license. Passport and birth certificate and family tree is nobody's business. If it was as simple as a drivers license then this law would never have been needed...but unfortunately, there are more phony driver licenses than you could imagine so they went ahead and passed a law requiring proof...as in Passport, birth certificate etc...

I don't want illegals running around any more than you. I just don't believe I should compromise any of my rights to do it.

It's illegal for anyone not to have "papers" in AZ. If I get stopped by the cops and I had better have ID, if not then I'm sure they they'll find out who I am one way or the other before they let me go. That's not profiling.

We have quite a few illegals in NJ as well as terrorists camel jockeys who we dont want to "offend" if we profile them.
    MCJosh,
Do you believe our law enforcement agencys should profile muslims for potential terrorism? Or just leave them alone so we dont offend some of those who are not like the time square bomber.
    Wake up.

The Feds have required US citizens to carry propper identification ID'ing them as a legal citizen (or the like), sine 1946 IIRC.
