Canada: Gun registry Committee eyes fate of firearms database

In three days, the House of Commons public safety committee will begin hearings on a bill to get rid of the 15 year old registry for legal long guns. If it passes, Bill C 391 will wipe out a computer database of more than 6.8 million non restricted long guns that cost an estimated $2 billion to develop.

Canada: Former Winnipeg officers rip long-gun registry

Putting criminals behind bars for longer will do more to prevent gun violence in Canada than the long-gun registry, three former Winnipeg cops told a House of Commons committee Thursday. "(The gun registry) is not a particularly useful tool for investigating crime," said Jack Tinsley, a former inspector with the Winnipeg police. Eliminating early parole and house arrest would keep criminals from committing crimes, he said, while the gun registry just tracks numbers of guns by people who have chosen to register them.

Canada has traditionally been a lot less "Wild West" than America, but so has America. That the early settlers and cowboys all had guns is a myth. In fact, the reason that there are National Guard Armories stems from the fact that when the new country began calling up militias it found that hardly anyone had a proper gun.

Speaking of registry, I wonder if all of the people who get concealed carry permits understand that they are effectively registering themselves as handgun owners -- and paying the government for the privilege of doing so to boot.

That's not just CWP holders. That's everyone that's ever bought a gun from a gun store as well.

Technically speaking, the Federal government is supposed to destroy the background check records after you are approved and the locals are susposed to destroy them after (I think) five years. But as someone said on another forum "Believe that and I have a bridge in New York I'd like to sell you."

The NICS is not to be used to establish a federal firearm registry; information about an inquiry resulting in an allowed transfer is destroyed in accordance with NICS regulations.
