I have a 2012 Tacoma,2.7 engine with 52000 miles. I have changed the oil every 5,000 miles, and used Moble 1 synthetic 0W-20 oil. Up to the last two oil changes the oil from the motor was slightly dark. Now, for the last two changes the oil is almost black. Motor runs good, gas mileage is about the same. I have talked to two mechanics about this. They have no idea. Suggested that I change the oil every 4000 miles, which I will do.
Has anyone else seen this, what could cause this, and is it a problem?

I have 47+ k miles. My oil is black every change, but blackstone labs says everything is A+. Don't sweat it... it's dirty oil.

What kind of filter are you using?

Send it to Blackstone and you will know for certain if there is a issue.

I'm doing a 12,500 mile oil change interval per Blackstone lab analysis. 5k synthetic changes are a waste of $$ imo

Can’t judge an oil by its color. If your worried get an oil analysis done.

When the oil is black it only means that the oil is doing its job and suspending the soot etc. Color doesn't mean much.

I also think its a good idea to send a sample of oil to Blackstone Labs for analysis.
Order their free test kit online now so you have it ready for your next oil change (can take a couple weeks to get it).

The color of your oil is not indicative of oil wear.

Oil will almost always be black. I bet if I changed my oil, drove around for 50 miles and drained the oil it would be black. Oil doesn’t sit in a sealed unit.

I think if you are noticing a difference in your oil color or smell after all these years it justifies a lab test. It’s cheap and easy.

I am happy when my old oil comes out black, that just means that it has done it's job. Internal combustion engines have blow-by, even new tight engines have some.

I’ve seen two on this forum I think, and pretty sure both of them were doing very long oil change intervals. Not like catastrophic bad but more metals than average.

Interesting thread. So, I suppose I don't need to be doing 3k oil changes with synth blend then?

3000 mile oil changes are a thing of the past. Do 5K as the owners manual defines as the normal interval.

I use regular oil and don’t even do 3k, I do 5k. I would probably do 10k with synthetic.

The light comes on that early? i though it was 4750 for it to blink and when you hit 5000 its solid. Plus 5k is the recommended interval for a rotation. You sure it comes on every 3k?

I find 7,500 miles is good per change on synth 5w-30. Rather change the filter then than keep running it till 10k or change it at 5k halfway through the oil life.

So what if you drive 6k a yr with synthetic. What determines changes. Mileage wise it would mean about two yrs. OR Do you go to the yearly interval.
