I'm basically doing that with the alpine power pack to boost the speakers, minus the sub. Supposedly everything is pretty much plug and play with the included brackets and harnesses from Crutchfield. I did a little research on here, and then chatted with a crutchfield rep that was really helpful.

I'll let you know how easy it actually is when I get done. Spent right around $400 total, but there were cheaper speaker options for sure.

    My $0.02:

    1) Most speakers come with just bare wire leads; you use a pigtail connector to connect them to the factory harness. Not that dissimilar from when you install a head unit. Pretty easy stuff, it's literally just two wires.

2)If you're running an aftermarket head unit, compare the RMS ratings. My understanding is if you're pushing at least 3/4 you're okay. BUT if you're planning on running an amp, then compare that number.

    3) Only enclosures other than fabbed I know of are Taco Tunes. Sorry can't be much help on that one, I'm running sans amp personally.

I did a complete overhaul on my 3rd gen recently. The second gen has the tweeters on the door I believe but there will most certainly be a swap out of your stock speakers that you can get from Crutchfield.

I recommend searching in the Audio Forum for what people have swapped out with their second gens. Or you can call Crutchfield, they have great customer support. Swapping out your speakers is something you can handle yourself if you want to save some money. Prolly around $250.

Next step up would be a 4 channel amp for the speakers. If they are 100 watts rms a 4x100 will run fine with your stock wiring. I went with ********* because they have harnesses that connect to the back of the head unit to connect the amps to your speakers without much effort. Hardest part for the amp install is running power wire which is not that hard. Around $300 for this.

Next step after that would be a 2 channel amp and a sub which IMO is the most awesome thing on the planet. You could just swap out the speakers and get the sub and you'd be worlds above any stock setup. $200 for the amp 200-700 for the sub.

There are full plug and play setups that run $1,500 plus if you install yourself.

I will be at the April 7th meet if you want to swing by that and talk about it.

Thanks for detailed response, much appreciated!

I'll probably just do the door speakers for the time being, and then get a sub after I get a couple other mods done. I used to have a 15", and then dual 12" in my old explorer, so I'm well aware of how good deep bass is! I miss it haha.

Will try to pick your brain at the meet if I can make it, hoping to score some Masters tickets that weekend.

I live in the area. No specific 4x4 trails that I know of in the immediate area. There are plenty of forest service rds (dirt, gravel, eroded, wash board type rds) in the Cohutta Wilderness area north into the Cherokee National Forest in Tn.
