Exhaust Hangers: Tips for removal/installation?

Greetings! I'm needing to replace my muffler and tailpipe. There are three rubber hangers the muffler/tailpipe assembly slides into. I've never worked with hangers before. They're quite difficult to get the muffler/tailpipe support bars to slide out of/into.

Apart from using a soapy water mixture for lubrication are there any tips you can offer to make the job easier?

WD-40 use the red attachment spray in between rubber and hanger let it sit for like a minute easy peesy

 

If you don't have them already, a pair of

$23 Lisle 38350 Exhaust Hanger Removal Pliers

exhaust hanger removal pliers will save you some trouble. Between those and soapy water, the hangers should be easy to get on and off.

 

I use a quick spray of a penetrating lube like PB Blaster, work the bushing forward/back a couple times then it should pop right off. If not, repeat one more time with a little more lube.

 

I second this, works EVERY TIME.

 

I just cut the old ones off What ever penetrate spray is handy But Silicone spray seems to be the best for installing new ones

 

I use PB blaster and a flat screwdriver that can be crammed into the gap between the rubber and the metal pin. Pry them off in in just a few seconds.

I had all on hand, but thought I'd try the silicone spray first. Totally worked on the first try! Thank you so much!

Now I have to get the muffler off the intermediate pipe. And no matter what I do I can't get it off. Ugh. Time for a new thread I guess.

Are you sure it is not welded

It has been so long they all start looking alike

 

Yep. It was a u-bolt clamped connection between intermediate pipe and muffler. Got the clamp off but couldn't pull the two apart at first (but initial tries show it could move). A friends told me that it's not uncommon for some places to crimp the pipes when a u-bolt is used.

I think that was the case in my instance. I'm going to update the other thread appropriately. But that spray silicone lube worked like magic on the rubber hangers at least!
