OP... Buy a 3rd gen and join the brotherhood before you get so worked up over the truck that most of us love. If you end up with a different brand just to piss off Toyota (who doesn’t really care) you are gonna be pissed for getting a less reliable vehicle. Just think it through before you jump off the ledge.

Toyota has been building vehicles with options packages and not offering options ala cart for decades now. 1 email won’t change their business plan.
The brakes stop the truck just fine. The rear drums pads last longer then disk break pads.
The 3.5 litre is a proven reliable motor. I own 2 vehicles with the 3.5. Never had a issue with the motors.

 

Don’t let the rear drum brakes cloud your thinking, it’s a non issue and actually more reliable for the rear than disc imo.

For starters, if you take apart any disc caliper, you’ll find crud/muck in there just about every time you need brakes. That means you don’t just replace pads, you ought to take the piston out, clean and new seals to be GTG till the next time for a trouble free job.
Also they can bind and do get stuck in rare cases, the bore/frame can get out of round and all sorts of other issues, so if you swap them for used re-builds, keep that in mind.

With drum brakes not so much, just turn the drum, replace or rebuild the wheel cydr and you're GTG. About a 15 minute job with just a pair of pliers, screw driver, line wrench, very easy job.

Ala-cart options menu can get very expensive, you therefore pay more for an individual option than a packaged one, keep that in mind. You’ll get more for the bang on a package, just ask for a discount at the dealer.

The 3.5L putt-putt should be good for 250-300k+ plus miles with proper maintenance. That means regular oil & filter changes, using regular 87 top tier fuel, regular air filter, cabin filter changes every 15-20k miles, and pcv valve change 3/36 intervals, diff fluid change and lube.

Most people don’t keep their vehicles for much more than that, (300k miles) as it takes many years to accumulate for most and by that time the sun will dry out the interior, and the heat/cool cycles will do a job on all the rubber under-hood, outside plastic/rubber, paint, other components to the point you don’t want to own it no more.

Oh and the smell! Ugh! That awful deteriorating interior smell is the payback for that new car smell lol!

But you’ve already had TOYOTA and maybe you want to try something new, better maybe??

This is Hilarious, well If you like Drum brakes then yeah you had no choice but to buy the Tacoma because they are the only ones using drum brakes, they are way ahead of the competition. you sure wouldn’t want one of those four wheel disc brake Jeep Rubicon‘s or four wheel disc brake Raptor or four wheel disc brake power wagon. Yep Toyota is on the cutting edge with those drum brakes. Everybody knows that drum brakes work the best off-road especially when they’re wet. Yes ZekeR7 you are a wise one.

Guess you never went thru swamp mud? I didn’t say wet. Also like every one have said, disc brake was first seen before drums. Probably should look it up before belittling people. Disc brakes were first seen in late 1890s. Drums were early 1900s.

Drum brakes ARE NOT good with wet conditions, but they do well in muddy/sandy comditions compared to disc.
Drum brakes are cheaper to replace.

Disc brakes of course have better braking efficiency than drums, but that doesn’t matter when it’s at low speed (we are talking about off-roading here in mud not Baja 1000). On top of that, once mud gets caked on there, they become slippery which they have a higher chance of doing in mud.

Front brakes handle about 60-70% of the braking power (probably should take racing classes or even a motorcycle class since they teach you braking power). Reason why all front brakes are now disc.

I can go on and on since I use to race racer karts and autocross since I was 14 which you have to go thru racing courses to get the license, but I guess you just read what is said on internet and fall into marketing that disc is all round better than drums.

 

I tow 5-7k pounds all the time with my Tacoma. There hasn’t been a single instance that I would’ve rather had (or even noticed) rear disc brakes. Hell, I didn’t even know it had rear drums until I read it here. (Obviously before I did all the work on mine)


This thread is pretty hilarious though. I didn’t buy a Toyota to be on the cutting edge of tech... I bought it because it looks cool and is decent for soaking up some negative equity.

 

If you loose your brake booster while offroading and climbing hills, you'll appreciate drum brakes can be applied/stopped with only 300 lbs per square inch vs disc that require 1k+ to apply. Other makers only care about the glitz and the glamor/hype, to sell their vehicles but we're talking about reliability here, when you're 100's miles from a shop.

The Frontier interior still feels like a truck from 2004.

The Colorado is nice though. I'll take my chances with Toyota QDR over Chevy any day.

 

I agree but your letter needed to include a complete redesign of the exterior to include the grille.

Also need to bring the price point down about $8,000.

I probably will never buy another Tacoma again (unless mine gets totalled and I’ll never buy a 3rd Gen).

I love mine but the new ones are way too expensive and ugly.
I can’t spend that much on a truck that requires suspension over hauls and other expensive mods to actually be a truck.

 

I just wrote a letter to Toyota asking for 4 wheel drum brakes ! , posted a link to this thread. I told them get with the program and get on the new wave of drum brakes as everybody knows disc brakes are stupid and drum brakes are the best. I’m hoping maybe Toyota will add drum brakes to the new redesigned 4runner that’s coming out and just spoke to my dealer and he told me the 2019 TRD pro will have front drum brakes as well as rear drum brakes because it’s an off-road model. I gave a deposit Immediately. He also said I could special order with upgraded audio 8 track tape player with am radio but i’m not an audio file nut, I’ll just stick with the standard audio. Nothing to do but wait now.
