I know you posted a "how-to" on this a while back in here. I think you recommended to do it when it's warm out right? I kinda wanna do this to mine as well but am afraid of messing something up. When you start peeling it up, how do you get it out from behind the rubber weather stripping without messing any of that up? Does it just pull out from behind it with no issue? Also, what did you use to get it started? I don't have a heat gun or blow dryer and would prefer to not have to go buy one either lol. And, you just used that cleaning wax to get those smudge marks out?

 

Those are actually some of my favorites! Love the looks of them and they definitely look sturdy. That may end up being the route I go. Did you install them yourself?

 

Yeah, very easy, comes with bolts and washers. The nuts are already in the truck under plastic plugs underneath the cab.

I haven't removed the vinyl myself, but the weather stripping comes down with just a tug. Shouldn't be a problem. No screws/tabs.

Yes, the warmer it is the easier it peels off for sure. You shouldn't have a problem with that out there unless you're at a higher elevation. Just park the truck in the sun. If you're unsure, go to someplace like Walmart and get a cheap hair dryer. You can also order a decent heat gun cheap from Harbor Freight but like I said, in the sun out there likely not an issue.

So just use your fingernail to get it started and then always peel it by keeping it closer to the truck. If you try to pull "away" from the truck it will tear off in smaller pieces and drive you nuts (experience). Once you get it going pull with one hand and use your thumb or a finger from the other to get under it closer to the truck and kind wedge push pull all at once. As you get closer to the rubber moulding just go slower to keep it all in one piece and it will just pull right out from behind it. That was the easiest part for me. The hardest was the part that wrapped on the inside of the door.

Go buy some fresh Goop or I would try to find that 3M adhesive remover. Some guys use WD40 too. Wet the softest rag/towel you have really really good and lay it on the sticky parts, leave it there a minute or two. Then rub gently. Use a lot of remover and as little pressure as possible. I did the opposite because I was rushing. Then if you wind up with those splotches like i had go get you some of the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax. Shit was amazing.

Heat guns are super cheap (as much as a hair dryer)! You can get them at Home Depot/Lowes for $20...although I splurged and went for a $30 that allows me to control the temp and fan speed. I'm surprised how many things it is useful for (debaging, vinyl installation, shrink-wrapping wires, re-shaping or decoupling plastic panels, etc). And heat guns get much hotter than a hair dryer.

 

Yea, next 25% (or 20%) off coupon I am picking one up at Harbor Freight. I even saw where if you have the aged black plastic trim how you can turn it black again with a heat gun. But for me it will be more practical applications like you described.

 

Or I could just go crazy and spend a lot of money on a really good one...........

great for melting off frozen e-brake lines. Especially when you put a load of snow in the bed, it melts in the sun, drips on rear driveline and then freezes over night.

Not that I did that.

 

Awesome, thanks for explaining it to me (again) lol. Sounds like it should be fairly easy then. I'm not sure the optimal temp. I should try it in, but it's not too hot here yet. And you and @ToyoDrew have convinced me that maybe I should just invest in a decent heat gun. I do have a $50 Lowe's gift card that I've been wanting to use I work in a aircraft maintenance shop, and we have a couple Milwaukee heat guns, and they definitely do make some jobs easier. I think I have been afraid to do any mods on my truck so far because I bought it brand new late last year and I'm afraid of attempting something and doing a shitty job. My OCD is really annoying with this truck lol. But yeah, that means I should just use a heat gun so I can do a better job of removing this vinyl.

So when you removed yours, was there a lot of adhesive left on the paint? I appreciate your guys' input and for taking the time to explain this.

Edit: So this adhesive remover stuff is safe for the orange paint, right? I don't want to be rubbing adhesive off and mess up the gorgeous inferno paint!!
I have goo gone I think, and I know I have Goof off. I would be afraid of using goof off though, I think that stuff is actually used for removing paint if I'm not mistaken. I think I originally bought it to remove overspray off the garage floor from when I painted my old skid plate lol. I'm trying to see if I can find that 3M stuff at Lowe's but their website doesn't look like they have it
