List of Mods to Increase MPG's

haha guys.. I just wanted to see if there was a mod on these newer trucks that was Financially worth it. Guess not..... Drive less, drive slower, accelerate slower, and don't run the A/C. I'll stick with that. Thanks.

 

Try your best to keep your rpms under 2000

 

26.1 mpg today, with about a 80/20 mix of highway/city driving with the highway driving at 55 mph.

Not bad for a V6. My fill-up calculated mileage is up above 21 now with a mix of interstate, back highway, and city driving.

 

I added a K&N air filter
18" Magnaflow muffler
Imco resonator
My mpg went up 1.5

 

Those of you that have a 3" lift, how much has your MPG decreased?

 

Your best results would be with the electric cooling fan conversion, clean filters, good oil, tire pressure corrections(data on my truck was miles off) and an easy foot.

 

I watch my tach and try to keep it under 2K RPM best I can. The AC makes the gas gauge drop so quick I can see it move sometimes, so I made a rule...it only gets turned on above 95 degrees (or when it's raining and the windows are up of course).

 

AFE pro dry s air filter and ive got my tires set at 34/32.

 

Mine hasn't moved.

 

The trick with the tonneau cover is that it must only cover 1/2 of the bed...the rear half. I did some computation fluid dynamics in college simulating flows over a pickup. A full tonneau cover is worse than an open pickup bed, because an open pickup bed creates a "bubble" which allows the subsequent air flow to pass smoothy over it. Driving with the tailgate down also screws with this "bubble" and creates drag at the rear. The most efficient option is to cover the rear half of your bed...it maintains a "bubble" just behind the cab and smooths out the rear end tailgate area. I believe Ford or GM already knows about this and has a patent on it.

 

I'm kind of nerdy about fuel economy. Track every tank with an iPhone app. Over >100 tanks, the biggest difference in economy was caused by ambient temperature, which you have no control over (the truck uses more fuel in the winter, regardless of a/c use in the summer, and I think it's a function of the ecu's cold weather map, not any difference in driving style). The next biggest was when I switched the Dunlops out for Michelins of the same size (but obviously greater rolling resistance. The Michelins cost me almost a liter/100km). Adding a tonneau made too slight a difference to be sure about. Premium gas the same. And switching to a TRD exhaust and filter made essentially no observable difference. That's just me, my truck, my driving style and terrain, but FWIW. I honestly don't think there's any way to make a significant difference in the fuel efficiency of the v6 other than how you drive.

 

Unless your thermostatic clutch is malfunctioning, there are no gains to be had with a electric fan. One way or another, your engine has to power the fan ... whether directly or electrically. Older cars without thermostatic clutches (my 66 Mustang) or faulty ones most certainly benefited though!


OP: Crunch the numbers, you'll never pay off money spent on mpg mods! Best thing to do is slow down and keep your vehicle in good maintenance.

 

are there any programers for the Tacoma 6cyl 2013

 

I went from a 3" drop to a 2.5" lift (So total of 5.5" increased ride height) and lost 1 MPG.

That is not to say that getting a 6" lift will only decrease your MPG by 1. It's all relative as I am still at a reasonable height.

 

If I could gain 3 mpg by changing my muffler, I would do it tomorrow.

How about some details here? Was the flowmaster so loud it made you accelerate much slower?
