Then why didn’t they check it before they delivered it to you?

Well one would think that they would check all of the fluids upon arrival but apparently that is not the case. I will be going through and double check all fluids myself.

Haven’t had a problem on mine. It does shift hard from neutral to drive, but I think that’s cause it’s been cold here lately and when the truck is warmed up, I don’t have that issue

They are not gonna check it cause I am not experiencing anything that would point to an issue. Neutral to drive when it’s cold is normal. All theyll do is plug in and check it electronically

I'm sorry but there is no way in the world any manufacturer would do that. They save $3 in bulk fluid, a few dollars in shipping, then pay the dealer $90 in warranty work. Not gonna happen.

My reference was to the cost of installation of a dipstick in all Tacoma’s, not fluid.

It's not free at my dealership- they told me if I wanted my transmission fluid checked I would have to pay for it.

SO true and it is not just with the the Auto industry it is really across the whole American economic system in general everything from burger king to Apple people no longer give a shit about quality anymore. If a lot of companies would base employee salaries on quality this shit would change

so I heard checking the fluid level in the trans took 4 hours, if it could be done by plugging in electronically I would think they would be more willing to accomplish it at customer request. Can anyone confirm time requirement?

    At least 4 hours...
I live 5 miles from the dealer. It took 4 hours for it to cool enough to check.

That’s the funny thing about the transmission level check. If you drive it several miles to the dealer, the transmission gets hot and is then above the recommended temp to check the level, so it takes hours to cool back down.

100 degrees can be reached by driving around your block once or twice.

The actual fluid check after letting the transmission warm up to just above 100 degrees only takes a few minutes.

For those who have not researched or checked their own transmission fluid level, it’s not difficult.

If you can change your own oil and you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you can do the transmission level check:
If you can dodge a wrench, you can......never mind, I digress.

For those of us checking at home or taking it to the dealer, when the proper temp is reached, the overflow bolt is removed and if a little fluid dribbles out, the transmission level is full.

The problem is, if no fluid comes out, you still don’t know how low it is, so fluid must be added until it flows out of the overflow tube, and it’s no fun working around a hot exhaust.

Or, you can do a check by just adding a quart first while the truck is cold and before starting it so that you don’t have to worry about a hot exhaust contacting your arm or hand. Then, bring it up to temp and remove the overflow. If some fluid comes out, then it’s filled and you’re done.

If no fluid comes out, then it’s still low. In this case, you can then just let it cool down at home and repeat the procedure of adding a half quart or one quart later in the day, or do it on another day if you so desire.

TW members have reported anywhere from about 1/2 quart to two quarts low.

Other TW members will have tips on how to determine the temperature of the transmission.

If you’re new on TW, you can do it!

There’s more satisfaction in doing it yourself and also knowing it’s done right. And, it might take a lot less time than bringing it to the dealer.

You can use any fluid that meets Toyota specs.

There was two failures and everybody’s attacking the high paid union jobs but the local non union under paid hacks at the dealership didn’t check the fluid so there goes your theory. basically every level is incompetent union or nonunion so there is no consistency. If the union hacks had missed it and the nonunion hacks had found it during pre-delivery inspection like they sign off and say they do then you would have something to say but that didn’t happen.
