I feel ya. I had a bear run me off my camp fire one year during the archery hunt. Ended up hanging out at the camp just down from me for a while. Turns out they had heard a cub crying up near our camp the night before and mama bear obviously hadn't found it yet!

In Utah, it is legal to carry a handgun during the archery hunt if you have a concealed carry permit. Like an idiot I had left my pack with my gun in the truck when my buddy ran into town for a few supplies...all I had to defend myself was a hatchet, and thought better of trying to tangle with just that.

I just had an axe and a knife. But I would have run. I don't have a gun

I have had a couple of run ins with bear coming through camp sniffing around. Sniffing at the tent you are in not knowing if they are going to come into said tent is pretty scary. Now my buddy G20 comes along all the time except with scouts. Big bear and Mt. Lion are the only thing that scare me out in the wilderness. Now Opossums scare me just because they sound like a bear coming through the woods just crashing everything.

Amen! Cats are becoming a real problem around here too. I have had one stalk me and my bro in law as we were hiking into a spot to sit for the morning during the archery hunt. It was like 3 am and pitch dark, we were using small head lamps to see as we hiked. The whole time I had a weird feeling like someone was watching me. Several times I would stop and quickly turn around and shine my light down the trail as far as I could see, but saw nothing. Later in the day after we sat and glassed all morning, as we started to hike back out, I could clearly see my boot prints in the powdery silt that had built up on the trail, with a cats tracks right over the top of them heading in the same direction as mine. The damn thing had followed us almost all the way from the truck to where we finally sat down to eat and watch for the morning (several miles). It was no wonder we didn't see any deer. They all knew the damn cat was around. But my brother in law and I never saw it, which is what makes the whole thing so scary...it could have come out of the brush and jumped on my back and I never would have seen it coming...

Cats you will never see or hear until they are on you for the most part. Even a bear you know they are near because of the unmistakable smell even if you don't hear or see them. I have only seen one cat in my time out in the wilderness and it was way in the distance but was definitely wondering what we were doing there. We kept a very close eye on where and what it was doing.

Same here, have only ever seen one. Mine was in a burn scar. The only reason I even saw it was because it was sitting against the charred trunk of a pine tree and all the ground cover had been burnt off, so it stood out like a sore thumb. We both looked at each other for quite a while very uneasily and then headed in the opposite directions of one another. Luckily it looked like a yearling, so it was as nervous about me as I was about it. Needless to say, I didn't hunt that area again for the rest of the trip!

Here we don't really have the issues with them but there are a few scattered around and Black bear are just curious about humans but keep there distance so we are lucky. But I've spent enough time out west to know what there is there. We do however have a lot more poisonous snakes so I am looking at the ground more to avoid getting bit. I have made friends with a few foxes over the yrs I swear wolves aren't where dogs came from but foxes from all my interactions with the dog family. Hell I had a fox come into my camp and sit outside my campfire and just hang out for a while like he wanted to get warm by the fire.

I scared the shit out of my friend with a black snake big ol' guy running away screaming like a girl. I couldn't stop laughing. Sometimes the bigger the dude the more scared they get.

i wonder if a mountain lion will chase a laser pointer? If I ever go camping, I'll require sharks with lasers on their heads. "laser"

They scare the shit out of me more than a Grizzly. To me they are like a UFC fighter where a bear is like a sumo wrestler. Bears will false charge a lot of times where if a Mt. Lion is headed your way you are lunch. Also Bear attacks are rarely for food the lion on the other hand you are their lunch!
