Well the shield is supposed to help keep that from happening. But really, it doesn't rain a lot in Wyoming so never a big issue. That said my dad has been running it for 5 years and been through lots of rain and snow with no issues.

I live in southern California so we hardly get much rain either lol, but a few times we'll get one of those crazy desert thunderstorms and that's when I had the issue with my previous CAI. And it was located in the same spot as the stock intake used to be, which is why I was concerned with his setup but hey, if it works it works

Also, this is from January but I blacked out my dads headlights for Xmas. Looks good I think. My DSLR was dead so I'll get better photos later this summer.

I know it's been awhile since I posted anything but I wanted to show everyone the latest addition to the FRV. I did a duel battery install. I've added a second battery only to run the stock equipment and the larger AGM deep cycle to power the Ham radios, refrigerator, Treager, and all other accessories. I added a charge controller for the AGM because I was finding that the stock charging system even with a 325 amp alternator was not charging the AGM battery correctly. From the research I've done a deep cycle AGM battery requires a higher voltage in the range of 14.8v to 15.3v to achieve a full charge. So I started looking for a buck booster to achieve the correct voltage since the regulators on the Tacoma is set to only output around 14.2 volts. After quite a bit of searching I found several options available, all from Australia. So I read all of the reviews and I found one that has started selling in the US.

    https://redarcelectronics.com/products/dual_input_40a_in-vehicle_dc_battery_charger

I know its expensive but if it saves you some batteries then your money ahead. I know of someone who has gone through quite a few yellow tops....

Anyway have a look at the pictures this thing will also keep your battery topped off with solar panels when you're at the camp site. I have two 50w panels set to plug in.

    [IMG]Tray Support 3 by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

This is a piece of 3/16" plate bent 90*. The whole piece was 17" x 14" with the bend 6" high. I then carved it up to set on the passenger side wheel well, since I don't have my air cleaner there.

    [IMG]Tray Support 2 by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

Here it is installed. I had to use spacers below the plate to bolt it onto the fender. All of the bolts were placed into stock threaded holes.

    [IMG]Battery Tray by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

New battery tray installed on top of support. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KVL3F6E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1

    [IMG]Ditribution Block by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

I added a power distribution block under the AGM battery on the stock battery support. https://www.amazon.com/Fastronix-Power-Distribution-Block-Cover/dp/B078VGKC8T

    [IMG]Starting view 2 by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

New starter battery added on the passenger wheel well. The ground is run to the fender, then down to the frame, and finally to the stock starter ground. So both batteries are grounded to the same place.

    [IMG]Hold Down Clip by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

I found the the new battery wasn't as secure as I would like so I made a clip to hang off of the edge of the new battery tray and then pull the tray down with one of the bolts.

    [IMG]Deep cycle view 2 by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

AGM battery installed with the charge controller and the distribution of all of the power. The module behind the charge controller is a voltage cut off switch programed so that if the voltage drops below 11.7 it will cut power to all of the accessories.

    [IMG]Headlight hole by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

Holy Headlight hole. I don't think I can put anything else behind the drivers headlight. LOL Some of that is winch power and cooling hoses for the supercharger.

    [IMG]Power - Jumping plug by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

Power distribution for running a ham station or jumping a car battery.

    [IMG]Solar plug by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

The blue connector is for hooking up solar panels. Note the controller only allows a max of 40v input so you have to run your panels in parallel mode.

    [IMG]Voltage indicator 2 by woodnick1, on Flickr[/IMG]

Voltage gauge for both of the batteries. The buck booster is working correctly showing a higher voltage that the main battery. This is a t idle but when going down the road it gets up to 14.8 volts.

Thanks for looking and if you have any questions please ask.

Right now I have a duel band IC-5100A dstar rig. I also have an IC-7000 HF-70cm rig I will install when when I get home. I'm running a scorpion SA-680 for an antenna on the HF rig.

Steve, that Redarc BCDC unit looks quite interesting.

I have a ctek smart charger I've been using to do a good cleansing charge on my 2-24F Northstars about once a mmonth but I've also thought about adding one of these to my system as well.

According to my scangauge, my voltage briefly hits 14.8 vdc after start up but it doesn't stay there very long. But the system does run at 14.4-14.5 all day long.

Mike your setup may be ok for a deep cycle. Have you had any problems with it? I think in 2nd gen Tacomas they may have reduced the voltage output to put less load on the engine to improve gas mileage so the voltages never got high enough for the battery to fully absorb a charge. Every time I got home I could put a charger on mine and it would only show about a 20% charge. I could charge it all night and in the morning I would be at a 100%. So that's what got me looking into how a deep cycle marine battery should be charged. Your setup will depend on if the higher voltages persist long enough for it to absorb enough current.

The other cool thing about it is you can plug in some solar panels in camp and never worry about your refrigerator dying.
