I’ve noticed recently that sometimes when I go into second gear (upshift or downshift), I feel what feels like a crappy or bad synchro. A little notchy grindy feeling in the shifter.

I can’t tell if it’s because I am getting lazy with the clutch (don’t think so), the synchro is bad, or the shifter is just operating normally and slotting into gear, with some sort of detent feeling I just never noticed before.

I sure hope there’s nothing wrong........

Has anyone else noticed what I’m describing?

I'm not sure what the official term is, but the clutch is super slow on these. I'm used to driving stick, and the MT on my 3rd gen is certainly a little different. Notchy 2nd, I'm pretty sure that's normal friend.

No problems here. Shifts fine. Now, I've only been driving a manual for 39 years so I'll let you know once I get a bit of experience...

Has a lot to do with how the rpms rev down... sometimes they stay up and allow a smoother shift sometimes they drop right away and force me to double clutch.

That's what I was thinking of, but I couldn't put it into words. Might have to do with the inertia of the crank, weight of the rotating assembly (pistons, rods) IDK what exactly, but the revs fall SOOO fast!

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Get the short throw shifter from URD. Had it on my 07 and loved it.

Yep. Same on upshift. RPM is key.

2nd is a bit notchy on mine. The rest are really smooth. From what I notice, if I shift out of 1st before 2200rpm or so it's a lot smoother going into 2nd.

I noticed a similar thing. It has to do with RPM. Usually it’s better if I shift at lower RPM and accelerating lightly.

Yeah that's what I've noticed, just be bellow with it if you're about to shift.

Interesting, mine is notchy from 1st to 2nd below 3500 rpm. Also, it's worse when cold.

Yup, cold weather seems to make it worse too. Does it when it is warm though as well. I guess I am okay with it as long as it isn't a problem. It doesn't bother me otherwise.

Mine used to be a little notch when it was new. It’s almost a year old with 14k. It’s nice and smooth now.

In my 1st Gen I switched to Amsoil and then it would not go into 2nd gear at all until the truck was up to operating temp, had to drain it out and put Dino Oil back in.

Depends on the RPM I shift at, granny style it's smooth, little bit of pep in my step and it likes some cohesion to pop into gear.
