Done. Frank in heat treating told me Saturday is my day.

The beauty about heat treating (other than the obvious scratch protection) is that it will color the engravings for me, then I polish the rest of it to a shine. It tends to get a golden brown color though, so I'll probably just sandblast it to a light gray prior to polish.

440 is not quite purdy as 316 at this point.

Unintentional O-ring groove with the hybrid design, tightened my original scrapped aluminum pc right up. It's a standard #19 ring.

Okay guys. I went back, and pretty sure you are the only 4 who want one of these in MT. I can cannibalize the remaining aluminum knobs to make the core, and then the stainless material will be in next week.

Just PM me with gram target , engraving preference, and your zip/postal code if I do not have it already. Also, note that 316 will be the default stainless material ... because 440C isn't as resistant to corrosion and doesn't look as nice unless it is polished after heat treat. It'll take a larger group buy for something 440C to happen, just so the cost can be absorbed. I only mentioned that option to get it out there as a possibility.

Side note: As for AT folk, I will probably make this hybrid style the default for those who wish for a stainless version. This is just so I don't have to deal with tapping blind 6-32 holes into stainless.

I drove around with the 530g knob yesterday, and I'm incredibly happy with it. I can still feel the return spring(?) in neutral, unless I wobble it back and forth enough to gain momentum. My biggest gripe with the solid stainless, was that I couldn't really feel that return spring. That, and with nearly 900g/2lbs the shifts were so fast that my perception was telling me the truck actually felt slower. Not great for a 4 banger truck, probably fine for the V6.

I won't say that this hybrid is an improvement in shift feel over the solid aluminum, because for me the aluminum is heavy enough. But, the look of stainless without too much of a compromise of added weight really works for me. Best of both worlds.

Thanks for being my muse, fellas ... don't think I would have come up with something like this on my own. The synergistic effects of sharing the product development on here are quite palpable.

All caught up until the stainless gets here.

I have the aluminum bar stock that I ordered already, was puzzled there was no stainless bar among them ... then I checked my email and saw this.

Blah. Was hoping to knock a few out today, but did this instead ...

MT knobs are completely sold out, AT is next ... so I won't feel right bumping this thread anymore(well, regularly anyway). Sorry for those who missed out, I'll make more when possible.

First 440C version out of the oven ...

Ramped to 1850F over 5 hours, and rested at 1850 for 30mins. Cooled with forced air.

All polished up. I only went up to 500 grit, don't want it *too* shiny. I'll probably still coat it at some point, but this looks good for now.

if you ever think about going the route of a heavy core and delrin knob i'd be in. metal knobs get too hot/cold where i'm at.

Yep, with this new design delrin is definitely in play for both AT/MT now. I'll go back and edit the post where I said "AT only". MT hybrid can definitely be any combination of metals/materials that I have in stock, just not solid delrin (unless it is 2pc).

Some updates on the AT design. Don't really need the same weight reduction as we do on the MT knob, but I would love to avoid tapping those little holes into stainless steel if I can. So now we have a default aluminum core for a stainless version.

I had to use a really fine pitch thread for the core pc OD, to keep from interfering with the 6-32 bolt holes (see how close they get below). It'll work no problem.

Also, I don't really need to recess the core into the knob for a hybrid (still need it for solid 1pc knob, though), but I'll keep it this way just so there doesn't have to be 2 versions of the boot retainer. I'm also considering all aluminum being 3 pc just like the hybrid, might make things easier on me for making them. The 1.5" aluminum needed for that part is basically free, and I'd rather eat the added cost just to keep the variations streamlined in manufacturing process.
