Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I understand your concern for sure, and I don't think an Otto only tune would necessarily negate the use of the port injectors entirely. I get that DI is needed when you're trying to avoid pre-ignition with a fairly high compression engine like this one (well, high compression in Otto mode at least). Mat is the expert and could probably answer this question too.

Just understand that the Otto only tune discussion started in one of the OV threads, as a kind of what if thing - mainly to satisfy our curiosity. I don't believe for a second that this would be the norm in all tune files going forward, as many probably wouldn't like the mpg drop that Mat has warned us would likely happen.

TL;DR - Otto only isn't a thing, but it could end up as an optional file if Mat decides to try it.

Not to quote you directly, or be rude in any way. I’m interested why the concept is even being talked about. Why did you buy a third gen to want something the 2nd gen has? The biggest update to the truck is the engine. A proven Lexus engine that has very tight tolerances and excellent craftsmanship. The only problem with its design is the tuning...proudly fixed by OVTuning as it sounds. The engine has proven to be awesome in the Lexus GS series cars. Sorry, but I don’t see the need to even consider Otto only for this generation of Tacoma. Just trade for a 2015. ​

I had the same thing the other day. I didn't drive my truck for 3 days prior though. It was really weird, never seen it to that before.

 

Besides there's nowhere on the tracking info that it passed through Kentucky. According to the tracking info, it went straight from California to New Jersey

 

So far the salt hasn't done much, it's been months since I actually washed it but I don't see anything to be concerned about

I think you may have misunderstood my friend, I'm not pining for an Otto only tune by any means. I do find it an interesting discussion though. That's pretty much where it ends for me these days, as the latest from Mat is pretty darn good
I will say that there's no need to try and stomp out the discussion though, just sayin.

I actually owned a 12 RAV4 V6 just prior to my Taco, and was impressed by how smooth and powerful that variant of the 2GR was (2GR-FE). I do understand that the -FKS is more complicated and my Taco is ~700 pounds heavier than the RAV was.

Anyone received their key codes today? Emailed Mat with my serial about 8 hours ago and haven’t heard back. Understood his response time to be pretty short.

Patience isn’t a virtue I hold well.

 

This happens on some trucks as a result of idle changes, it is only suppose to happen once during idle learning, but on a few trucks it happens more than once. I already have a solution finished for this. I'm just adding in a few extra little tweaks.


Regarding Atkinson mode. Has nothing to do with the injectors.
All normal safety stuff like knock control, valve cleaning, D4S, etc is all 100% functional like stock.

Mine was about a 36hr turn around (sent in Monday night, got it back first thing on Wed morning of this week).

 

Killed a bit of time rotating the full size spare in and registering the TPMS via TechStream, which Mat’s supplied OBDII works perfectly with. Just excited to see Mat’s work in conjunction with these heavy large tires.

ah ok i think i get it now. So if atkinson cycle was eliminated we would still be taking advantage of port and direct injection?

 

I already know this. I cant remember where but it does mention port injection is used in low load situations and then switches to direct injection when you need the power and step on it.
