Threw a rod @66,000 miles

Truck threw a rod , beat her up a little too much.

Got another motor in there. 4.0 with 100k miles.

I was a little too hard on her. Sucked mud up into the intake twice. One of those times (2 years prior) I had to pull the spark plugs and crank it to clear the water out. Our guess is that one of the heads got cracked from those instances and it finally gave way.

5w-30, I check the oil level every couple weeks

No video, was driving down the expressway at about 70 when it happened. Didn't hear a loud bang or anything. Just started to hear a nasty grinding sound and truck wasn't accelerating anymore so I knew something was up. Pulled over and sure enough oil everywhere.

 

lol, that's not the complete and final product. I need to take more of final install but it runs great!

 

Wow, and drive train warranty is 60K miles?

Any idea of the "why it might have happened"

 

OMG, I thought that was not indicative of the 4.0 motors.......have you done any modding to the motor that we might want to avoid doing or could this be possible wear and tear from the trails?

Which weight oil do you normally run? How long had it been since you last checked the oil level?

I have my bet on the oil weight.

Edit: Also would hit the rev limiter a bit while wheeling so yea avoid that

A crack in the head, possibly, if it caused coolant to leak into the cylinder. Rev bouncing won't, unless the vehicle is at some severe angle and then a few moments of lubricity loss happens. Especially if the oil was low. Then could later on become an issue.

 

All good though. Got it back together.

 

Yes so glad, motor swapped in runs great with all new seals. Will be babying this one.

 

I have a "race built" engine in mine. I don't baby it, but I do treat it with mechanical sympathy.

 

Uh he details how he beat the shit out of it and sucked in water, not once, but twice.

 

Could have been a head gasket, but that rod looks bent from the hydro-lock condition caused by the water/mud that was sucked into the engine. The damage was done at that point.

The engine was on borrowed time.
