He may get lucky , but if he were to bring it there she would be charged a diagnostic fee.

 

If you preface the transaction with a conversation saying "there is a known issue that Toyota has agreed to address for free that I think my truck is displaying symptoms of, can you let me know if that's the case" they'll take a look. If they want to charge I'd find another Toyota shop. Don't reward bad behavior.

 

On this topic, is there any driving characteristics that promote good health for the secondary air injection system? Ie- saying hi to the rev limiter?

 

I have a 2012 and just got something in the mail a couple weeks ago about a warranty extension for this issue. Will be fixed for free after the time and mileage period for the normal warranty. If you cant find anything on it, let me know and I can upload a pic of the stuff I got in the mail. Good luck.

True. It's like paying taxes to have roads to drive on. We are all helping pay for the repairs, every time we give Toyota money. I'm okay with this.

2 things. Moisture in the valves - not a lot you can do about that. Also, deteriorating foam filter inside injection pump crumbles and destroys pump. Remove the foam and do the uni filter mod to prevent that.

The newer models are having valve issues (even the 2013+). The foam deterioration problem takes more time than that.

So update: Get in my truck today, the check engine light didn't come on and everything seems fine.. I have an appointment with Toyota on Tuesday but I'm guessing they aren't going to want to fix it if the check engine light isn't on anymore..

What did I miss? Do we know what the DTC is?

 

Hopefully, the DTC is still stored in the ECU. If Big O gave you a print out of the code, that may help too. Either way, this is a known issue, and if you show up to a dealership with the light on and the code, they'll replace it under warranty.

 

secondary air injection is an emissions thing.

Federal emissions warranty is 8yr / 80k miles. OP take it to toyota, you will be fixed for free.... if they bitch tell them there is a TSB for this issue as well that extends it even further.

Classic 2012 air injection failure due to lack of shutdown purge.
