If I were you, I'd move out of Illinois before you turn 75! In Illinois, all drivers 75 years old and older have to take a road test every time they renew their driver's license. Once they're in their mid-80s, their license has to be renewed EVERY YEAR and they still have to take that damned road test!

A few couple ago, I was talking about Aspergers and driver licensing, but I went off on a tangent (as so many of us Aspies tend to do). Basically, only 50% of Aspies end up learning how to drive and get licenses. I know a lot of people with AS who have driver's licenses (though I only hang out with 3 of those licensed Aspies regularly), and I would classify most of them as good drivers. The rest are average, and one of them I wouldn't describe as downright bad, but he is very inattentive.

I'm sure there are plenty of Aspies out there who have managed to lose their driving privileges for whatever reason. I chatted with one such Aspie online (never met her in person or even saw her a picture of her so I'm skeptical as to how much of her story was real; I met her online), and apparently she'd done time in both Florida and Georgia for drug-related crimes. Another thing about us Aspies is that as a general rule we don't do drugs. I've smoked weed once before, but I don't fuck with hard drugs (like coke, heroin, and meth). I have on friend who wasn't diagnosed until she was in her late 40s, and earlier in her life she self-medicated by experimenting with cocaine and meth (she's got a master's degree and a great job, and doesn't fuck with drugs anymore). But yeah, as a general rule of thumb, Aspies (at least none of the Aspies I've actually met) do drugs.

Going back to driving, I consider myself to be a good (but occasionally inattentive) driver. There are plenty of Aspies out there who never get a driver's license, go their whole lives without driving, and lead successful lives. I know of one such Aspie who is married with kids. However, I am a lifelong car guy, and it would have been a travesty if I never got my license. Sometimes I really hate driving, but I've had my license for almost 7 years and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

So why the hell does he have to take the Ohio test? Ohio lets you exchange a valid out-of-state license for their license, unless it's been expired for a really long time...?

People always bitch and moan about going to the DMV for any reason, but I haven't found anything to complain about. Not including the three times I took the driving test (Parallel parking the first time, speeding and rolling a stop sign the second time, passed flawlessly the third time), I've been to the DMV probably half a dozen times since December 2014...

December 2014: Took my boss to the DMV so she could exchange her Nebraska driver's license for a Pennsylvania one.
February 2015: Renewed my driver's license for the very time (I got my license in May 2011, my birthday is in March, PennDOT sends out renewal notices 90 days in advance of expiration, and a PA license is good for four years; Once you turn 65, you have the option of renewing every two years to save money).
April 2016: Changed the address on my driver's license when my parents bought a new house.
Various times in the summer of 2016: Drove a former coworker there to get her permit and then took her back to teach her how to parallel park.

Occasionally the line is a bit long, but the trick to being in and out in 15 minutes or less when renewing your Pennsylvania driver's license is to go super early and not go on the first or last two days of the month.

Like most states, Pennsylvania does not require you to take any tests for a Class C license renewal, though people over 45 are randomly required to take eye tests. Pennsylvania also lets new residents from any U.S. state (obviously) and Puerto Rico transfer a valid license, or a license that has been expired 6 months or less, without taking any tests (other than an eye test). If your license is expired more than six months, you have to get a learner's permit and do everything from scratch. Pennsylvania also has full reciprocity with France and Germany, meaning that anyone from those two countries who is here legally can simply exchange their license for a PA one without any testing!

The last time I renewed my license, I went in, got my picture taken, gave the guy the last four numbers of my social security number, and walked out with a shiny new license ten minutes after I'd arrived.
